During the last recession, deep cuts to California’s disability services left lasting damage. Programs shut down, waiting lists grew, and poverty wages drove support staff out of the field. Individuals with disabilities and their families were left with fewer options and less stability.
Today, we’re facing a similar threat. Proposed funding for disability services in California has already been revised downward, before recent improvements even had a chance to take effect. At the same time, looming federal cuts to Medicaid would only make things worse, putting essential services at risk for thousands across the state.
This Friday, May 16, the House Budget Committee will begin reviewing a federal budget proposal that may include harmful Medicaid reductions. Five California Representatives serve on that committee and need to hear from us.
We’re urging all supporters to take action now! Call and email your Representative by clicking the link below and tell them to vote against any reductions to the Medicaid budget.
The Lanterman Act affirms the right of every Californian with a developmental disability to the services they need to live with dignity and independence. We must hold our leaders accountable to that promise. Let’s make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.
