Anna Prezioso with Mad Batter Bakery & Bistro

Anna Prezioso has always had a love for baking and decorating cakes. At Mad Batter Bakery & Bistro, Prezioso provides sweet moments of joy for her customers with her custom cakes and cupcakes. Traditional cakes are available in seventeen flavors but there are also dietary inclusive options, like gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan. Prezioso's success at the Mad Batter Bakery and her love of her community has inspired her to expand, opening another location that features a robust breakfast menu with an abundance of delicious choices.

We're excited to welcome Philippe Sommer to the CVSBDC team as a Business Advisor! Many of you may recognize Philippe from his involvement with the ICAP program. He brings a wealth of expertise in life sciences and venture funding, making him an invaluable resource for startups in these fields. Philippe is well-versed in funding strategies, term sheets, and valuation, with a special focus on the unique needs of life science companies. His extensive background includes leading Mergers and Acquisitions at Pfizer, founding and managing a Life Science Venture Capital Fund at CIBC/Oppenheimer, and starting several companies of his own. In addition, Philippe has a strong track record of mentoring and teaching at top institutions, including UVA/Darden, Northeastern University – Bouvé CLS, and George Mason’s ICAP program.

Reporting BOI (Benefit Ownership Information)


Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting is a requirement for certain companies to report information about their beneficial owners to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Who must report: Corporations, limited liability companies, and other similar entities that are registered or created to do business in the U.S.

How to report: Reports must be submitted electronically through FinCEN's Beneficial Ownership Secure System (BOSS). The process is free, quick, and secure, and most companies can file without professional help.

SBA Proposed Rule Expands “Rule of Two” to Multiple-Award Contracts


The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) issued a proposed rule on Oct. 24, 2024, expanding federal agencies’ ability to give preference to small businesses on task and delivery orders issued under multiple-award contracts (MACs). The proposed rule, which expands the “Rule of Two” with certain exceptions, is expected to boost small business contracting by up to $6 billion each year. Learn more.

SBA–Working Capital Program

SBA recently launched a new financing pilot that is particularly suited for supporting manufacturing growth. Working capital loans, in contrast to term loans, is money available to meet short term financial obligations such as purchasing inventory, paying short-term debt, and day-to-day operating expenses.

The Working Capital Program (WCP) Pilot is part of the SBA’s suite of guaranteed 7(a) loan programs and will support revolving lines of credit up to $5 million.The new WCP combines domestic and export financing under a single program.

Agriculture Small Business Loan Fund for Counties Affected by Hurricane Helene

The VSBFA's Agricultural Disaster Microloan Program provides support for Virginia's agricultural and forestry small businesses impacted by Hurricane Helene. Loans range from $5,000 to $50,000 for disaster-related needs. Eligible applicants must be owners of qualifying businesses established before October 1, 2022, with satisfactory credit and in good standing with the State Corporation Commission. Businesses must operate within designated disaster areas in Virginia. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more and apply.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension will host its annual Farm-to-Table Conference on December 5-6 at the Plecker Workforce Center in Weyers Cave, featuring two days of presentations and panel discussions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The event, co-sponsored by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Virginia Soil Health Coalition, will explore the theme "Connecting Food, Farms and Health."
