It was a pleasure to partner with D.R. Horton to renovate their 36,000-square-foot corporate office in Edgewater, Maryland. Thanks to our collaboration with Wade Architects, a once outdated, run-of-the-mill office space was transformed into a modern industrial open workspace across four floors.
A key theme of the design was to maximize natural light. To achieve this, we placed the office cubicles in the center of the building and added full glass walls to separate the spaces. The cubicles were kept low to allow natural light to flood in. One of the most striking features of the renovation is the substantial open staircase that seamlessly connects the top three levels. This architectural showpiece allows natural light to pour into each level's open lounges and dining areas. The staircase creates a “heart” of the office, connecting employees and spaces where they can interact outside their offices.
Another design highlight is the bold decision to paint the exposed ceiling black. The deep black ceiling serves as a dramatic backdrop, capturing modern industrial styling and striking a balance between intimacy and grandeur.
Our focus was to bring D.R. Horton’s light-hearted company culture to life. We placed a life-size buffalo (a quirky memento) in the lounge, custom-made ‘pancake breakfast tables’ for lunch-ins, a game room with foosball and air hockey tables to unwind after meetings, and quotes from Mr. Horton himself applied to the walls for inspiration.
We extend our gratitude to the D.R. Horton team for entrusting us with the task of creating a productive workspace that will positively impact the team and company culture for many years to come.
