Tanisha's Home Dedication: A Fresh Start After Years of Flooding

Last month, we celebrated a joyful milestone with the dedication of Tanisha’s new Habitat home. For Tanisha and her three children, ages 4, 6, and 8, it marked the end of years of instability and the beginning of a brighter future.

During heavy rains, water came in around the front door of Tanisha’s apartment. After six floods in three years, Tanisha couldn’t wait to become the owner of a well-built Habitat home that would have enough space for her and her children.

“I am really doing the Habitat program mostly for my children, because I want them to have the stability that comes from owning instead of renting. They will always have a place to come home to, and when the house is paid off, I can leave it to them.”

Balancing motherhood, a full-time job at a customer service call center, and Habitat’s requirements wasn’t easy, but Tanisha persevered.

“You have to be very organized and keep a good calendar, but it’s been an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend that anyone thinking about Habitat just go ahead and do it.”

In addition to the required classes on budgeting, saving, and home maintenance, Tanisha found added value in a mental health class offered through Green Tree Peer Support.

“It helped us feel that we are not alone and guided us through different challenges, like even those we face at home with children.”

Now, her family looks forward to the peace and quiet of their new home, and for the kids, having their own rooms is a dream come true.

“I want to thank Habitat. It is such a great program and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m so honored to have been chosen as one of the candidates for a Habitat home!”

Congratulations, Tanisha, and welcome home!

Habitat homeowners don’t receive their homes for free — they purchase them with an affordable mortgage. They also complete financial education classes and invest hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” by building their own homes and helping others build theirs. Your support helps make this path to homeownership possible!

Sweet Dreams and Bedtime Stories:

YEP! Teens in Action

Earlier this month, our Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!) teens rolled up their sleeves to bring comfort, and bedtime stories, to local children in need. Partnering with A Bed and A Book, our teens helped assemble and deliver bed packages to families across the community.

This meaningful volunteer project provided more than just furniture, it gave kids a place to rest and read. Each A Bed and A Book package includes a brand-new twin bed, cozy bedding, a soft pillow, and a few age-appropriate books. All items are provided free of charge to families, thanks to dedicated volunteers and generous donors.

Through this hands-on experience, our YEP! teens not only learned the power of service but also saw the real impact of helping others sleep better and dream bigger.

A Bed and A Book works with local agencies to ensure families with children ages 0–17 receive support when they need it most. Each delivery is more than a bed, it’s a foundation for better rest, learning, and growing.
