The Students Supporting Israel club at San Jose State University joined with Hillel of Silicon Valley, the Consulate General of Israel, and Club Z, the Zionist youth group, to host a Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemoration at SJSU's Mosaic Cross-Cultural Center. Cantor Leah Shafritz of Temple Emanu-El joined us to sing El Male Rachamim and two songs by poet and Palmach paratrooper Hannah Szenesh (Ashrei Hagafrur and Eli Eli). SSI Vice President read the moving poem "Every Person Has A Name". Holocaust survivor George Elbaum, San Jose State University administrators, and community members joined with students to remember the Six Million.
Last Thursday, students, faculty, and staff at Santa Clara University, both Jewish and non-Jewish alike, were able to learn about and remember the Holocaust. They lit candles for the Six million Jews who died and spoke about how to create a better world in the future where the Jewish people can have equality and live strong, vibrant lives without fear of being persecuted for their Judaism.
Last Friday, students enjoyed an intimate Shabbat Dinner at the Hillel House. The students got the chance to lead Shabbat dinner by lighting the Shabbat candles, reciting Shabbat blessings, and singing songs together as a community. The meal was provided by a group organized by Barb Green, co-chair of our Shabbat Cook and Sponsor program.
