Celebrating Sandra at 40: From History-Maker to

Thriving at the Sanctuary

This Valentine’s Day, we are celebrating a truly extraordinary milestone — Sandra’s 40th birthday! Sandra is not only one of our beloved orangutan residents at the Center for Great Apes, but also a global icon whose story helped change how the world views great apes.

Born in 1986 in Germany, Sandra was sent to Argentina in 1994, where she spent many years at the Buenos Aires Zoo. After a long period of living alone in the inner city zoo, Sandra’s situation became the focus of a landmark legal case that would forever change her future.

In 2015, Sandra became the first orangutan in the world to be legally recognized as a non-human person in Argentina. The court affirmed that she is a sentient being with the right to be respected and ruled that she could no longer remain on exhibit in a zoo. The case made international headlines and helped spark global conversations about animal welfare and the rights of great apes.

After years of international permits and planning, Sandra finally arrived at the Center for Great Apes in November 2019. Since then, her life has changed. Today, Sandra has choice, space, enrichment, and the opportunity to form meaningful relationships.

One of the most beautiful parts of Sandra’s sanctuary story is her relationship with our male orangutan, Jethro. After careful introductions, Sandra and Jethro formed a close bond, and today, Sandra often chooses to be near her handsome companion — nesting, relaxing, and even watching TV together inside their nighthouse. After spending so many years alone, seeing Sandra thrive in a loving relationship is a powerful reminder of what sanctuary can provide.

Sandra’s personality truly shines at the Center. She is a creative nest builder who loves anything that adds to her big, beautiful nests — including boxes, textiles, toys, and even banana leaves and grape vines. She’s also known for her playful and goofy moments, from wearing baskets as hats to carefully “washing” and hanging up her blankets to dry. Add in her love for lemons and limes in her water and dried fruit, especially Craisins, and it’s easy to see how Sandra is embracing life to the fullest.

As Sandra turns 40, we’re not just celebrating a birthday; we’re celebrating a life transformed. From a history-making court case to a life filled with love, enrichment, and companionship, Sandra’s journey is a powerful example of why sanctuary matters.

Graphic Design Contest Winner Announced!

Graphic Design Contest Winner Announced!

We are so happy to officially announce the winner of our January Graphic Design Contest — and to share just how blown away we were by the creativity, heart, and talent of our incredible community.

With nearly 30 unique designs submitted by artists from near and far, our staff had the difficult (but joyful!) task of reviewing each piece and selecting the designs that best captured the spirit of the Center for Great Apes and our residents. Every single submission reflected an incredible amount of thought, care, and passion for the apes, and we are truly grateful to everyone who took the time to participate.

After much discussion, one design stood out to our entire team.

Congratulations to Our Winner: Shelby Satterfield!

Shelby is the winner of our Graphic Design Contest! Her beautiful design featuring orangutans Sandra and Jethro immediately captured the hearts of our staff and was selected as our Annual Spring Member Day shirt design. We cannot wait to see this design come to life on our shirts, which will be available for purchase at our event next month.

Six Additional Designs Selected!

In addition to our grand prize winner, six other beautiful designs were also selected! These pieces will be featured in our print-on-demand online store starting next month and may also appear on additional merchandise around the sanctuary.

This contest showcased so many unique artistic styles and interpretations of our mission, and we are thrilled to be able to highlight multiple artists and their work.

A Huge Thank You to All of Our Artists

To everyone who submitted artwork: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your creativity, time, and love for the apes truly shone through in every piece. It means the world to us to see our residents and mission reflected through your art, and we are so grateful for the outpouring of support and talent.

Our 2026 Auctions Are Coming Together

OOpsie

Excitement is building for our Spring Member Day Silent Auction and our Online Auction coming in late spring 2026, and we are already so encouraged by the generous response from our community.

To those who have reached out and committed items—thank you. Your thoughtfulness and creativity are helping us build auctions that will be both meaningful and successful. We are truly grateful for your partnership.

We are still collecting special items to round out both events. Gift certificates, vacation stays, original artwork, handcrafted goods, themed baskets, and unique experiences all help create excitement while supporting the lifelong care of the orangutans and chimpanzees who call our sanctuary home.

Every donated item helps provide enrichment, nutritious meals, veterinary care, and the daily compassionate attention our residents deserve. These auctions are joyful gatherings of support—and each contribution makes a difference.

If you would like to donate an item or introduce us to a business that may be interested in participating, we would love to hear from you.
