From Kenya to Corporate Technology Global Leader with Service Now: Meet Tim Muindi, GlobalMindED Inclusive Leader Award Winner for Technology
Tim Muindi has been recognized for his remarkable contributions to promoting racial equity through his leadership at ServiceNow as the GVP Treasury, Sustainability, and Global Impact. Tim's dedication to creating lasting change in underrepresented communities has made a significant impact, particularly through the launch of the ServiceNow Racial Equity Fund. His story is one of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to challenging the status quo.
Tim's Journey: From Kenya to the Bay Area
Tim was born and raised in Kenya. His parents, dedicated to community service, established Tumaini Children’s Home in Nyeri, Kenya, serving homeless and orphaned children. Witnessing the impact of this ministry, Tim was inspired to continue a legacy of service. He pursued higher education in the United States, earning a BS in Accounting/Information Technology and an MBA in Finance from Willamette University.
These academic achievements laid the foundation for his impressive career in finance. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area nearly 20 years ago, Tim became active in community outreach, addressing issues like food insecurity and homelessness. Alongside his wife, Serena, he mobilized friends to prepare and share meals with the homeless, consistently expanding their efforts to serve the community.
Tim’s professional journey includes various finance and treasury roles at companies such as CNF, Ernst & Young, Seagate, Tibco, LinkedIn, Lumentum, and ServiceNow, where he now serves as Senior Director of Treasury Services. His diverse experience across industries has honed his ability to develop scalable treasury operations and strategies that drive financial growth.
Launching the Racial Equity Fund
The ServiceNow Racial Equity Fund was a direct response to the 2020 wake-up call following George Floyd’s murder. Tim, deeply affected as a Black man, sought to leverage his professional capacity as a treasurer to address wealth disparity. His research highlighted that since 1865, Black Americans' share of the nation's wealth has only increased from 0.5% to 1.5%. This stark reality drove Tim to create a fund aimed at building generational wealth in Black communities across ten cities where ServiceNow operates.
The $100 million impact fund focuses on creating equitable opportunities in low-to-moderate income communities across the United States through sustainable wealth creation, promoting homeownership, affordable housing, entrepreneurship, and neighborhood revitalization. The fund deploys capital through community-led banks and has resulted in 360 mortgages funded, 1,100+ affordable housing units, and 15+ small business loans.
Getting the fund approved wasn’t easy. Tim faced his fears of proposing such an initiative. However, his determination paid off, and the fund's success has empowered him to have crucial conversations within and outside the company, influencing others to join this vital cause.
Beyond his corporate role, Tim co-founded the Muindi Foundation, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of Silicon Valley's underserved youth. The foundation's LearnNow programs focus on educational perseverance and comprehensive support for academic success, ensuring students achieve grade-level proficiency. Through free tutoring, mentorship, and social-emotional learning opportunities, the foundation helps children excel academically, socially, and emotionally. The Muindi Foundation extends its impact by providing essential support services, including hygiene care kits and outreach programs, to assist homeless and at-risk families in low-income communities.
Tim’s journey and the impactful work of the ServiceNow Racial Equity Fund resonate deeply with GlobalMindEd's mission to close the equity gap through education and career success. By addressing systemic disparities and empowering underrepresented communities, both Tim and GlobalMindED strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society. We are inspired by leaders like Tim who challenge the status quo and advocate for meaningful change, aligning with our collective vision of a world where everyone has access to opportunity.
