From Learning English in Middle School to Graduating in Finance: Meet Vicky Lin
As we celebrate Asian Pacific Islander Month, we are proud to spotlight Vicky Lin, a First Gen grad of the GlobalMinded First Generatio Program.
What is your personal/professional story?
I was originally born in China. I immigrated with my family and lived in Colorado for 17 years. During this time, I didn’t speak any English at all. I went to Broomfield Heights Middle School for a year and a half. Then I went to Broomfield High School for four years and graduated in 2012. I started Front Range Community College in the summer of 2012.
I got two years of an Associate of Art Degree transferred over to University of Colorado Denver. I majored in Finance and Risk Management Insurance. My minor was Ethnic Studies. At college time, I participated in many events in school such as transcend retreat and risk management insurance events.
I graduated in May 2018. I started working in IMA Financial Group in Denver as a Certificate of Renewalist. I worked there for three years then left in June 2021 helped my family with Restaurant in Denver as a Waiter. My future is to do a job as a recruiter and help other people with more resources.
Where does your passion to serve come from?
My passion came from my family because my parents didn’t go to school when they were kids. I always knew when I moved to America that going to college completed my school dream. So I can learn more and make more money to support my family as a First Generation.
What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?
It’s my friends from college who give me courage to continue success in school. My friend helped me with my school work and always encouraged me that I am a great person who can achieve my goal. Especially when I failed my exams and I always remembered that my family gave me financial help. I had told myself whenever troubles just remembered, try your best and never give up your goal. Don’t care about the result, just enjoy the process is better than anything else.
How can GlobalMindED help you realize your goals?
I hope GlobalMindED continues to invest in me and others. I hope they can help me post graduate with starting my career.
I enjoyed the conference. It made me think about different world views. I met amazing people from different colleges. I also learned a lot about how to be successful in my journey.
