From Music Performance and Math to Lessons of Impact: Meet Chris Snelgrove, Lifelong Teacher and Learner
We are honored to feature Chris Snelgrove as part of our August Education Series, celebrating educators who are shaping the future of learning. A dedicated teacher with the Eastern School District in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Chris is passionate about fostering student growth and creating engaging learning environments that inspire curiosity and academic success.
Tell us about your personal journey. (This encompasses both personal and professional aspects)
I began my journey as a teacher in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1994. Having completed a performance degree in violin, and an elementary education I went to the public school system to begin a career in teaching music and mathematics.
I stayed as an active performer for many years. Enjoying both traditional and classical music and recently in March 2024 after 30 years of teaching in the public school system I retired.
What pivotal experiences shaped your current path?
I guess the most pivotal experiences would be the fact that I still wanted to be a part of and enhance the culture of our, culture, rich, Newfoundland and Labrador lifestyle. We live in quite likely, one of the most unique places in the world in terms of our love, hospitality, and genuineness toward all that come here to visit this beautiful land.
What are the most valuable lessons you've learned through your work?
Most valuable lessons learned- anything worth doing is worth doing well, and putting your best efforts into everything you do.
I made it a point to attempt to impart that value in every student I taught for 30 years.
What drives your desire to contribute and make a difference?
My mom and my dad would have to be my driving force behind who I am. I had a great relationship with my mom, but my father was by far the best friend, confident, teacher, and coach I ever could ever want in this world. Everything that I am and everything that I will be and everything that I have been, I owe to my father.
How can GlobalMindED support leaders like yourself in achieving your goals and advancing your aspirations?
I believe that teachers of the past need to still be a part of the training of the teachers in the future in order to ensure that the educational values and the values of society are not lost.
