From Northeastern to Grand Valley: The Visionary Leadership of Dr. Philomena Mantella

Dr. Philomena “Philly” Mantella, President of Grand Valley State University (GVSU), is a trailblazer in public higher education. As the first woman to lead the university, she brings decades of experience and a bold vision for creating inclusive, responsive, and future-focused institutions. She will be speaking at the 2025 GlobalMindED Conference.

Mantella has prioritized increasing access to higher education, regardless of where individuals are in their educational journey with a focus on adult students, first-generation college-goers, and underrepresented communities. This work includes the creation of GVSU Omni. Launched to support the 2 million Michigan adults with some college but no degree, GVSU Omni consists of flexible online, hybrid, and community-based delivery models.

Rooted in agility and local partnerships, Omni works closely with community colleges, employers, and community organizations to design relevant, customized learning opportunities to help produce much-needed talent for the region. Mantella’s focus on meeting the community’s needs also includes building strong partnerships with business and industry leaders.

These collaborations include career-aligned learning opportunities co-designed by employers, increased access to real-world learning like internships and co-ops, and helping students transition more effectively from college to career. For Mantella, the goal is not just education, it is mobility, agency, and long-term opportunity.

Her leadership is shaped by decades in both public and private higher education, including prior roles at Northeastern University and the State University of New York (SUNY). Her approach to executive leadership is collaborative, student-centered, and data-informed. She believes institutions must listen more closely to the voices of students and communities, and build structures that meet real-world needs both now and in the future.

At the GlobalMindED Conference, Mantella will speak about the role of higher ed in economic mobility and how institutions can be drivers of innovation, equity, and inclusion. She will also explore the need for universities to partner across sectors to deliver high-impact solutions that prepare students for the future of work. Dr. Mantella’s work underscores a powerful truth: when education systems adapt to the lives of students—not the other way around—they open doors that transform families, communities, and economies for generations.
