Annual Fund Meets 100% Parent Participation Goal!

You did it! It is with an immense amount of gratitude that we announce we have met our participation goal for this year's Annual Fund. Every donation plays an invaluable role in allowing SBMS to profoundly shape the lives of our students and the future of our school, and we are so honored to have the support of every single family.

We have some fun plans to celebrate this great achievement with our students - stay tuned!
50 for 50

7th grade parent Alex Popovich set a high goal for himself as his 50th birthday approached: run a 50-mile race and raise donations to fund an SBMS scholarship in the process. The race is about a week out, and Alex is two-thirds of the way to meeting his goal. Alex chose SBMS as the beneficiary of his efforts because he "can think of no better place for a young person to grow, learn, and spend their early teenage years." Follow along with Alex's progress and support his fundraising efforts  via this link. And wish him good-luck if you see him before his race on January 17!

As we finish up the last two weeks of the semester, I wanted to bring up the topic of  growth mindset, originally coined by Carol Dweck   from Stanford University. For two years I have spoken at the Parent Association meetings about growth mindset. In a few weeks you will see on your child's report card some information about their mindset in each of their classes. For this blurb I wanted to answer the question, "Why is a growth mindset so important to SBMS?"
  • When we adopt a growth mindset, we are more likely to persevere, we stick with things longer. Studies show that teenagers' ability to tolerate frustration has gone down. They are quicker to give up when faced with a challenge. In a longitudinal study of nearly 400 seventh grade students, Lisa Blackwell found that, "giving seventh-grade students a growth mindset message plus study-strategy lessons, compared to simply giving students study-strategy lessons, increased their math achievement later in the year. The key is to help students believe that effort can make a difference." At SBMS, we want students to engage in struggle, embrace challenge, and to not be deterred by failure so that they increase their resilience and grit when faced by all of life's obstacles (both inside and outside of the classroom).

Happy New Year and welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful holiday!
Our next meeting will be this Tuesday, January 14 at 8:30am . Dave Mochel will be talking to us about Applied Attention and Mindfulness, which are subjects that he presented during trainings with the SBMS faculty and staff. Tiffany Foster will also be joining us and giving us a SBMS Board of Trustees overview. Hope to see you there! Click here to see the video from our December meeting.
Next parking lot coffee will be Thursday, January 23 at 8:30am . Stop by for a cup of coffee and some morning treats and socialize with other Middle School parents. Bring your own mug to help keep us green.
