The Kiva Project
The 7th grade went out into their neighborhoods to fundraise for The Kiva Project and have already raised above and beyond their goals. From fresh-squeezed orange juice to lemonade and homemade cookies, there were lots of goodies to share with their community!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
GRADES
The first semester of the 2019-2020 school year has concluded. Grades are being entered this week and report cards will be mailed to your home address soon. If you are inquiring at another school and have been asked to provide an official transcript, please email Lilli in the SBMS office.

LICE UPDATE
In preparation for the upcoming March journeys, the SBMS Health and Safety team is sending out the following request. We would like all parents to do a "lice check" on all family members. If students bring lice with them on the trips, they can spread easily. If you discover that your child has lice, please notify the SBMS office. We have found that lice are best treated at home and have included our Head Lice Control Procedure to assist you. Please contact Lilli in the school office with any questions or comments.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR RETURNING FAMILIES
  • Wednesday, February 5, 2020: Enrollment Agreement will be sent via the Hub, in the same way you've signed forms in the past.
  • Friday, February 21, 2020: The signed Enrollment Agreement in the Hub and deposit payment in Smart Tuition are due. In order to hold your child's seat for next year as well as accept financial aid awards, we must receive the signed agreement and deposit by the due date. This includes 8th grade students who may not be returning but want to hold a place.

COMMUNITY & EVENTS
COMMUNITY ACTION + 6TH GRADE KICK OFF FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
Together, we will be working hard to raise funds to help purchase a bike for  Cycling Without Age , a non-profit program that is being led by SBMS former teacher and dean, John Seigel-Boettner. Cycling Without Age gets seniors out into the fresh air and into our community on weekly bike rides. Let’s give our local seniors an outdoor, wind-in-their-face biking adventure much like we have all been fortunate to enjoy!

How can you help? Help your children support these fundraising efforts during February:

  • Bake Sale Wednesdays: Everything is $1
  • Raffle Baskets: Buy raffle tickets (at drop-off) for your chance to win: 1) a basketful of sweet treats or 2) a basketful of bike parts and cycling needs for the spring trips or 3) a Valentine’s Day basket. Each ticket is $5. Drawing will be held before Valentine’s Day.
  • Sign up at Diamond Time for our 1st Annual Pickleball Tournament - all skill levels welcome, it’s just for a good cause. $10 entry fee (REMEMBER: It’s a fundraiser!)
  • Sign up at Diamond Time for our 1st Annual Backgammon Tournament - $5 entry fee

SHAKESPEARE NIGHT: SAVE THE DATE
On February 10, from 7pm-9pm, the 9th grade will be putting on their production of William Shakespeare's  Macbeth .

BOOK CLUB
Our next book club meeting will be on Thursday, March 5, at 8:30am in the Library. We're reading The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani and would love for you to join us!
BIKE FOR SALE
Specialized Stump Jumper Expert for sale. Dual shock; 26 inch; aluminum alloy; excellent condition; fast and light. Well maintained and just checked out and tuned up at Hazards and Bike Bob’s.

This bike was $2600 new in 2007 as a top-of-the line MT bike. It was originally sold to Victor for $1300 in 2010 and he is now selling it for $600. It’s a large frame but Victor is 5’9” and it fits perfectly so it should fit 5’7” to 5’11” and you can ask Bruce if he can fit the bike to you as he knows it well.
LIGHTS UP! FUNDRAISER
Open to one and all next Friday night! A great theatre program run by SBMS instructor and alum parent, Amy Love. The program includes many SBMS students. See more information in the flyer below!
BIANCA'S BLURB

At this time of year, you may find your child worried about friendships. Maybe they think they haven't met their best friend yet, maybe they are afraid nobody likes them, maybe they're questioning if they fit in. These are all typical middle school fears and concerns. Your child is not alone. A desire to belong is probably one of the strongest feelings humans have. And I want to be clear that belonging is different than fitting in. As Brene Brown explains, fitting in often includes compromising who we are (our beliefs, our values, how we look, things we say) for the sake of being included into a group. Belonging, however, is when you are unapologetically you and feel a sense of contentment and warmth around you. So how can we help our kids belong? Remind your kid,
  • That making new friends takes time. It won't happen overnight, or even within the first few months of school. They had years to develop their friendships at the elementary school and being patient will pay off.
  • That most, if not all, middle school aged kids worry about making friends.
  • They are not alone in this feeling of wanting to belong.
  • That friendships change. Maybe they were initially drawn to a group when they first arrived at middle school and now don't think it's their tribe. That's OK. Friendships change over time.
  • That friends mature at different rates and friends that maybe shared similar interests before, no longer will. That's OK. Encourage them to branch out.
