From Spain to the Revolution: Bernardo de Gálvez and the Journey to American Freedom
When we think about the American Revolution, names like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin usually come to mind. However, one of the lesser-known heroes of U.S. independence came not from the colonies but from Spain: Bernardo de Gálvez. As the Spanish governor of Louisiana, Gálvez played a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the Revolution. His leadership, courage, and vision connected the fight for American independence to the broader global struggle against British imperial dominance.
Gálvez provided critical support to the revolutionaries, supplying them with weapons, ammunition, and food. His efforts ensured the Continental Army could sustain its fight, particularly in the Mississippi Valley region.
