As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, we want to thank all of our clients for trusting us with your care.

Whether you're traveling, entertaining family, or simply enjoying a long weekend, we hope you take some time to relax and recharge.

In this issue, we're sharing how therapists grow from students to professionals at River North, introducing new ways to customize your massage, and exploring a few common massage myths.

Happy Fourth of July!

🌱 From Student to Professional

One of the things that makes River North Massage Therapy Center unique is that we don't simply employ massage therapists—we help develop them.

Many begin their journey in our Student Clinic, where they build hands-on skills under the close supervision of experienced instructors while completing their education.

After graduation and licensure, many continue with us in the Graduate Clinic, where they begin their careers as licensed massage therapists, gaining valuable real-world experience while continuing to refine their clinical skills.

With experience, confidence, and advanced training, many advance to our Professional Clinic, where seasoned therapists provide the customized care our clients have come to expect.

This progression creates something special. Experienced therapists mentor newer professionals, learning continues throughout every stage of a career, and our clients benefit from a culture built on education, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

And you can see that journey happening today. Please join us in welcoming Bennett, Izzy, and Stacy to our Graduate Clinic, and congratulate De'Eric and James on their advancement to our Professional Clinic.

💆 Massage Myths

Separating fact from fiction, one myth at a time.

Massage therapy has come a long way over the years. Today, many of our practices are guided by scientific research rather than tradition alone.

Here are a few common massage myths:

  • Massage flushes toxins out of the body.
  • You have to drink lots of water after a massage to remove toxins.
  • That soreness the next day means it "worked."
  • You should avoid massage during the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • Massage breaks up lactic acid in your muscles.
  • Massaging a pregnant woman's ankles will send her into labor.
  • No pain, no gain—massage has to hurt to be effective.

📰 Study Spotlight: The Science of "Rest and Recharge"

That deep calm you feel during a good massage isn't just in your head — it's measurable. Researchers track it using heart rate variability (HRV), the gold-standard marker of your parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest-and-digest" mode governed largely by the vagus nerve.

In a controlled study, a single massage session — particularly focused work on the neck and shoulders — produced a measurable increase in the HRV markers that signal parasympathetic activation, shifting the body out of "fight-or-flight" and into recovery. In plain terms: massage doesn't just feel relaxing, it physically nudges your nervous system toward calm.

So the next time you leave a session feeling lighter and slower to anger, that's your vagus nerve doing exactly what it's supposed to do — and it's one more reason regular bodywork is a real investment in how you feel.
