Hi Friends,

I’m writing this from the road where, last night, I got the best call ever from my editor - telling me that By Any Other Name debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestsellers list! I am pretty sure all of Texas heard me scream with joy. I’d like to thank all of you who have already immersed yourself in the novel - it’s all due to you that the book has been so successful out of the gate. And although I’ve had other number ones, this one feels hard-earned and special. First, the bestseller list has been very static of late, with old favorites entrenched and without too much room for new books. The previous #1 book (a great novel by a great writer!) had been solidly at that position for 29 weeks! Second, the whole point of this book was to make the world know the name of Emilia Bassano - the female poet who I believe wrote some of the plays attributed to Shakespeare. Knowing there are tens of thousands of people who now could tell you all about her makes me feel like this novel accomplished exactly what I’ve hoped for. I’m a very happy, supremely grateful author.

The tour has been a whirlwind of early mornings, TSA lines, and - my favorite - friendship bracelets from readers I meet!  I’ve loved getting to say hello to all the fans who have come out to support the new novel and hear my thoughts about it.  Please come see me next week in the Midwest and West coast and then in the UK and Australia!

XO,

Jodi

Have You Seen...

I had a great time discussing By Any Other Name and being a female author with Chelsea Handler on her podcast, Dear Chelsea.

BY ANY OTHER NAME Is An Instant New York Times #1 Bestseller!

In 1581, Emilia Bassano—like most young women of her day—is allowed no voice of her own. But as the Lord Chamberlain’s mistress, she has access to all theater in England, and finds a way to bring her work to the stage secretly. And yet, creating some of the world’s greatest dramatic masterpieces comes at great cost: by paying a man for the use of his name, she will write her own out of history.

In the present, playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. Although the challenges are different four hundred years later, the playing field is still not level for women in theater. Would Melina—like Emilia—be willing to forfeit her credit as author, just for a chance to see her work performed?

Told in intertwining narratives, this sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and desire asks what price each woman is willing to pay to see their work live on—even if it means they will be forgotten.

Just finished it (By Any Other Name) today! As a retired English teacher, I’ve read books about this, but it’s hard to give up on my dream man (I have a bust of him in my living room!). It makes so much sense though! Who writes perfect drafts? And all the Italian info! I mean there was no internet! It was a fun read! Thanks for your writing! Maybe I should get a bust of you to put next to him?
