Hi Friends,
Well, in what has to be the crappiest timing, I tripped and broke my arm two days ago. In the words of Justin Timberlake is this “going to ruin the tour…the world tour” ? No, because I will move heaven and earth to make sure it doesn’t. In the words (almost) of Taylor Swift: I can do it with a broken heart (arm).
That’s the good news. The bad is that it’s hard for me to type and hurts a lot, so instead I’ve decided you get to be the ones writing this month’s newsletter. In particular, those of you who have read and loved advanced reader copies of By Any Other Name:
“Wow, this was an amazing novel. I had an extremely serious book hangover afterwards.”
“This book was special. Jodi Picoult masterfully intertwines the stories of two remarkable women, separated by centuries but united by their love for storytelling and their struggle for recognition in a male-dominated world.”
“Once again, Jodi rocked me to my core.”
“Yes, a thousand times yes.”
“Hey Jodi, how does it feel to be god’s favorite? I finished this a week ago and am still thinking about it and talking about it to anyone who will listen.”
“No notes. I loved it. Might be my favorite book this year.”
“Jodi Picoult keeps hitting it out of the park.”
“Jodi Picoult is a literary queen!! I quickly found myself lost in the worlds of both Shakespearean era Emilia and Melina in the present day. I love a good dual timeline story and this one weaves the two stories together flawlessly. Both Emilia and Melina are brilliant, bad ass women and reading their stories was very inspiring! ...I really enjoyed this story that mixes history, literature and love all in one beautiful book!”
“A different but no less exceptional read from Jodi Picoult... The author’s note indicates she expects criticism for daring to suggest Shakespeare did not write his own plays, but this is not a new theory. And knowing the extent of research Jodi always does for her novels, I’m willing to accept it as more than a plausible theory... Jodi again demonstrates why she is one of my favorite writers. Her novels are always clever, thought provoking, emotional, topical, extensively researched and entertainingly presented. I always learn, I always feel, and often my perspective is changed. And It made me reflect on the fact that Jodi, whilst being one of the finest writers of our time, Is still too often seen as a female writer for only female readers. That, my friends, is a modern day tragedy. I encourage you to devour this, and her earlier works.”
“I am thoroughly smitten. So thought provoking and clever. Many downs and some ups. Women’s rights in Elizabethan times. So many talented, famous artists really owe their fame to others. Read this and find out who is behind Shakespearean plays and poems. All this juxtaposed to modern times. A fabulous read all around!”
“This book absolutely gutted me... I am always floored by the way she weaves together these beautifully tragic and incredibly informative stories. Her deep dive into Bassano’s life is amazing and although her tragic story is heart wrenching, I’m glad to now know who Emilia Bassano is.”
“This book gave me all the feels, but doesn’t Jodi always do that?”
“Wow. Just wow. This was my first Jodi Picoult book and it for sure won’t be my last... The writing... MAN, the writing. It was so good... I needed tissues. Needless to say, I can't wait for my next Jodi Picoult book!”
“10/10, Once again Jodi Picoult had me in a chokehold.”
“I would recommend this movie to folks who enjoyed the Barbie movie – if you loved the Barbie movie there’s no way you won’t love this feminist masterpiece just as much.”
You have to know that hearing praise like that makes me feel like others are totally getting the message I wanted to convey with this book. And that they love Emilia Bassano as much as I do. Thanks to all who’ve read and posted reviews like this – your words mean the world to me.
XO,
Jodi
