Fun Stanford Facts:

There are 166 palms stretching along Palm Drive and around the outside edges of the Oval. Well over half of them are Canary Island date palms. A total of fourteen different palm trees can be found on campus.

Technically winged lions-griffins typically have an eagle's head and forelegs on a lion's body. These winged beasts have been called griffins by the Stanford community for nearly nine decades. In 1978 the griffins were moved to the front of the Stanford University Boy's Gymnasium. They were part of a campaign to become the Stanford mascot but lost out to The Cardinal. They sat in front of the gymnasium until it was demolished in 2008, then were moved to storage while a new location was under consideration. Today the newly restored cast-iron griffins are located alongside Pine Avenue. This diagonal road was designed to run from the site of the Stanfords'  proposed new home-never built due to their son Leland Junior's death in1884-to the nearby Peter Coutts estate. The Stanfords purchased the Coutts estate in 1882 and stabled thoroughbred racehorses there. The Mausoleum was erected on the site of the proposed new home in 1888.
