It was inspiring to see so many neighbors at last Thursday’s District 4 & 7 Upzoning Town Hall, our largest turnout on the west side, and a clear sign of deep concern and rising pushback against City Hall’s upzoning proposal.
The Lurie administration's plans would permanently reshape the west and north sides of the city. Before anything moves forward, residents deserve to be fully heard, their concerns respected, and their priorities reflected in the plan.
This is not a housing plan; it’s a demolition-and-redevelopment scheme. Upzoning incentivizes speculative tear-downs of stable, lower-cost homes and local shops, replacing them with taller, denser market-rate projects that push out tenants and small businesses.
We need sound urban planning, not YIMBY-lobbyist and billionaire-backed upzoning maps that harm thriving neighborhoods. We need real affordability, not trickle-down promises.
