NOTICE: The Moffat Library of Washingtonville Board of Trustees has decided not to hold a budget vote for the upcoming fiscal year. Therefore, 2020-21 Moffat Library funding levels will remain the same as the current year (2019-20).
As per the Governor’s Executive Orders, the Moffat Library will hold a library trustee election via absentee ballot, which will be mailed by the Washingtonville Central School District along with their materials to all registered voters in the district.
The library trustee election ballot will be a separate ballot in the packet. Please see the WCSD website ( https://www.ws.k12.ny.us/ ) for more information on the absentee vote process.
Thank you and be safe everyone.

THANK YOU HEALTHCARE WORKERS
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who made cards and posters for our local healthcare workers earlier this month! In total, 42 handmade cards and posters were submitted by Girl Scout Troops 480 & 544, the Moffat Library Teen Advisory Board, and members of our community.

These cards and posters were delivered to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital to show our appreciation to these incredible people. Thank you for helping to brighten up our world and a big thank you once again to our local health care workers!

DELVE THE DATABASES!
Everyone at Moffat Library hopes that you had a pleasant and happy Mother’s Day last Sunday. Right now, we may not all be able to be as close to our family as we would like. But, near or far, the connections that we have with our families and communities are so valuable.

It’s the perfect time to reach out and learn from the memories and experiences of our parents & grandparents. Whether you are just starting to build your family tree or are an experienced genealogist, we have resources to help! Our Ancestry database is available for home use through at least May 31. It’s free with your library card!

Witnessing History Project
As we live through this unique period of our shared history, where schools, businesses, and cultural centers are closed, and citizens are asked to stay home while essential workers continue to serve our communities, we must remember to preserve and document this moment for a broader understanding of how COVID-19 has affected communities and families throughout our region for future generations.

Our local history librarian, Matthew Thorenz, thought the “Witnessing History Project,” facilitated by Orange-Ulster BOCES, presents K-12 students with a unique way to share their stories as part of an ongoing archive of first-person accounts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Hudson Valley.

HISTORIC POSTCARD JIGSAW PUZZLES
Take a trip down Main Street in Washingtonville, 105 years ago with this week’s jigsaw puzzle postcard! This image includes several local iconic features.

On the right is the elm tree and watering trough, which stood at the corner of Goshen Avenue & Main Street, along with the Samuel Moffat Store and post-office.

On the left is the “Armenian Building” which contained the grocery store of John T. Brooks, Bond’s Drug Store, and the Grange Store, with the National Bank building on the corner of Main, and South Streets.

At this time, the Blooming Grove Turnpike (Route 94) was still unpaved in our area. It would be replaced by a concrete road in 1919.

According to our Local History Librarian, the banner across main street was placed there by a local suffragette club for the upcoming vote to allow women the right to vote in New York State!
