SELF-CARE HIGHLIGHT

Sleep Hygiene

Sleep is essential for health and well-being. Good sleep revitalizes the mind and body, and is defined by quantity (too little or too much) and quality (falling asleep quickly and staying asleep).

Below you will find helpful tips to encourage better sleep hygiene. These tips can help improve your sleep, but if you continue to have sleep issues, please consult your medical provider.

YOUR SUPPORT TEAM

The Fund's Visiting Nurse Team

At The Fund, our Visiting Nurse Program provides lifetime support using a collaborative approach to provide assistance that enhances the well-being of each service member and their families. Our goals include helping each veteran develop the skills to achieve and maintain independence and their highest state of well-being. The program creates a framework to improve the overall health and wellness of our service members, veterans, and military families. Our visiting nurses provide support and assistance throughout the recovery journey.

COMING UP THIS SEASON

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Other than non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in men in the United States. Early detection and treatment are vital to improving survival rates. While early symptoms are rarely noticeable and are similar to other issues, early screening is essential. Know your family history and other risk factors (age, military service, race, and ethnicity), PSA (prostate-specific antigen) score, and have regular check-ups with your doctor. If you are experiencing urinary symptoms or are at risk of prostate cancer, reach out to your healthcare team for further evaluation.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and risk factors range from family history and genetics to environment and lifestyle choices. Women veterans may be at a 20-40% increased risk, but there are VA resources available to help manage risks, recognize symptoms, and support ongoing health. As early detection leads to more positive outcomes, the VA is actively involved in research to improve prevention and treatment strategies for Women Veterans Health Care. We encourage you to know your risks, talk to your doctor, ask questions, and follow preventative screening guidelines.

KIDS HEALTH HIGHLIGHT

Summer Wellness Tips

With school back in session, your kids may be online more often. Cybersecurity is something that should be at the forefront of our minds and is vital to teach growing minds. Keeping security software up to date is paramount. While it’s important to teach your kids to never give out personal information or talk to strangers, it’s also essential to teach them to treat others with kindness and respect. Remind your kids that anything posted on the internet lasts forever and encourage them to report harmful activity such as bullying.
