A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

Can you believe it has been a year since schools closed and we began to shelter in place? The second week of March 2020 was a week like no other. Every day the news changed, events were being cancelled, plans were changing by the hour.

On March 13, 2020, we made the decision to close our Children’s Center and to instruct all employees to work from home. We thought it would just be for two weeks, maybe three. 52 weeks later, we have moved from crisis to a new normal.

We have learned to care for very young children while wearing masks. We have learned how to conduct webinars, rather than public forums. We have filled gaps so that children and families have enough food, have safe places to study, have access to reliable information. We have learned to pivot, and rethink, and consider deeply what are our core values, and what unique gifts must we share with our community. I continue to be both proud of and humbled by the tremendous work of our IVYP staff. Truly, we are caring for our community.

I hope that in the next few months, we will shift again. I know that some things have changed forever – and even for the better. Zoom is here to stay. But, in other areas, we will learn another new normal. Our local public schools will re-open, but our work will be different. We’ll see more demand for childcare, but we will still need to maintain social distancing. Eventually, we will receive vaccines. And, I am confident that with your help and support, we will be able to weather the challenges that the future will inevitably bring.

Thank you.

Volunteer With IVYP

In response to COVID-19 and an increasing need for food in the Goleta Valley, IVYP in partnership with UCSB have established a Drive - Thru Meal Distribution. IVYP is searching for volunteers to help with both on site food distribution and food delivery in order to reach more people in the community. The delivery and distribution activities follow strict COVID-19 safety protocols, are contactless, socially distanced and outdoors.

Classroom Highlight
Women's History Month

"We performed dramatic play, to learn more about the first African-American female astronaut in America, Dr. Mae Jemison who orbited the earth for almost 8 days. We tried to simulate space and created a stage where the children could see the moon, stars and some planets. We built a spaceship where the children painted with chalk and to promote fine motor and gross motor skills as well as socialization. We all had a great time and learned a lot!"

IVYP Staff Receive Vaccines

IVYP's staff is on the road to being vaccinated! The majority of our eligible staff members have received their first COVID-19 vaccine and many are now fully vaccinated. This month some of our staff members waited in line together receiving their vaccines at the same time. While some staff may have been hesitant, our team encouraged one another, and are motivated to protect our students and ourselves. We are proud to be taking part in this process to ensure a safer and healthier community.

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution. This month we are highlighting potatoes! Potatoes are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which make them very healthy. All in all, potatoes are a great addition to your diet in moderation. They are also naturally gluten-free, which means they can be enjoyed by almost everyone. We love this recipe because it's easy to make, healthy, and super flavorful!

Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
Did you know that many of our most vulnerable students don’t have a dedicated place at home to do their school work? IVYP will purchase and distribute folding desks to any GUSD student who has a need through our new Study Table Fund. To support this effort click here to donate.
