Director's Corner
Dear Grey Muzzle Grantees,
First, CONGRATULATIONS! We have a terrific group of grantees this year, and I can't wait to share your successes on behalf of senior dogs.

As you hopefully know, Grey Muzzle is committed to collaboration. The launch of this "Director's Corner" e-newsletter, exclusive to Grey Muzzle grantees, is just one piece of the partnership puzzle. We hope to use this platform to highlight your good work, encourage networking and collaboration, share professional development and funding resources, and much more.

We're kicking off "Director's Corner" by focusing on adoption policies and practices. Covid-19 has provided the opportunity to re-examine many aspects of how we do business. The Black Lives Matter movement has further encouraged reflection on and reconsideration of policies and practices that create barriers to adoption. We hope this is just the beginning of a deeper conversation about what we all can do to help more good old dogs find and keep loving homes. We look forward to sharing additional resources and research on this topic and engaging in honest and open discussion about it.

If you have other topics you'd like to see covered, please let me know. I'm excited to be working closely with all of you on behalf of senior dogs in need.

Sincerely,
Lisa Lunghofer, PhD
Executive Director
P.S. If you haven't already, please join our grantee-only Facebook group . We'll be discussing stories in this newsletter--and more--in that forum.
July Hot Topic: If Your Adoption Policies Put Up Barriers, You’re Part Of The Problem
Check out this blog that was recently written and shared by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement (AAWA). It's a three-part piece that offers a unique view on a complex topic that’s more relevant than ever—adoption policies and how they can reflect biases against under-served and marginalized communities. We invite you to read this article , and let us know what you think in our Facebook group discussion.
Would the shelter where you work adopt a pet to you?
A case study presented by Maddie’s ® Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Florida
If you went to your own animal shelter or rescue group to adopt, would you pass the screening process? One shelter operations manager wanted to challenge her team’s attitude toward adopters and submitted an adoption application without using her name. When she was turned down, she used that experience to launch a complete culture change at the shelter, and earn her Master’s Degree in Shelter Medicine in the process.

Grantee Spotlight: NorCal Boxer Rescue
NorCal Boxer Rescue is a three-time Grey Muzzle grantee. This foster-based rescue serves a 200-mile radius around Modesto, CA. In the past, they have received Grey Muzzle funding to help expand their foster network, and this year funds will be used to reduce barriers to senior dog adoption by providing one year of post-adoption veterinary expense support to adopters of senior dogs.
