From the Rector
“Families are complicated.” I can’t think of a more universally true statement. No matter the background, location, or age, every family system is complex. And whether it’s acknowledged or not, in every family system there are issues and struggles rooted in past behaviors and decisions. Including actions which transcend a household: decisions made by our forebears.
On Sunday, we’ll hear from our rich and complex family story: the fall of Adam and Eve. Much good and poor, and at times harmful, theology has been extracted from this foundational story. Nevertheless, it points out some basic human truths. Yes, it showcases human disobedience, but also our desire for more – beyond what God has provided for us. The quest for more – more knowledge, more influence, more wealth – is in itself not a bad thing. The problem is that we so often lose sight of their true purpose: to enrich and support the whole human family of God.
In response to our ancestor's actions, and through his grace, mercy, and love, God has gives us our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who disrupts the chaos of our ancient family system and uproots who belongs to who and what our true purpose is – Jesus said to the crowds, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” We belong to each other. We belong to God. Our true purpose is to do the will of God, that which restores and unites the whole human family of God.

Fr Larrabee, S. Anthony of Padua,
and Fr Lawler
Thursday, June 13 at 8:00am
Thursday, June 13 offers a significant liturgical and personal confluence at the Church of the Ascension. All in one day we will remember the Baptismal anniversary and year's mind of our 10th Rector, Fr Larrabee; the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, under whose patronage Ascension's food pantry operates; and the 80th birthday of our beloved priest associate, Fr Lawler.
Please join us as we celebrate this wonderful convergence at our weekly Thursday 8:00 a.m. Mass, followed by a festive breakfast in Wheeler Hall.

Chrys' Closet: Children’s Summer Day
Saturday, June 15 from 10 - 11:30 a.m.
In preparation for summer, our partners at Chrys' Closet will be offering a children's activity day in the Our Lady of Victory garden. Families will receive summer care packages and a copy of a new bilingual book, The Place Where I Belong, written by a Chrys' Closet volunteer. We are looking for two to four volunteers from Ascension to help welcome families, assist with the distribution of snacks and care packages, and children's activities. If you wish to volunteer, please speak with Fr de la Torre.

Consider being a Coffee Hour host
There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.
If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
