Beacon College President George Hagerty and his wife Dr. Oksana Hagerty in March made an arduous journey to Romania to rescue their nieces and nephew who are Ukrainian war refugees and bring them safely to Florida. Award-winning advocacy
Beacon freshman Fiorella De La O recently was named a top-10 finalist in the 2021 Apprentice Ecologist Awards presented by The Nicodemus Wilderness Project. Winners are selected from the pool of youth volunteers who conducted an environmental cleanup or conservation project this year as part of the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™. The winners are whittled down based on their demonstration of exceptional personal leadership, initiative, and environmental stewardship in their projects. The Nicodemus Wilderness Project coordinates volunteer events worldwide that utilize the resources of the community to provide long-term environmental benefits for natural areas. The Tourism Management class taught by Beacon hospitality & tourism instructor Teri Hunter recently visited the Florida State Fair to experience the economic impact the fair has on the Tampa area.

Beacon philosopher Dr. Zachary Isrow spent more than one night in Bangkok (actually in Leesburg at the Melon Patch Theatre) playing chess master Freddie Trumper in the Tim Rice musical “Chess,” where the moves on the chessboard aren’t nearly as intriguing as the gambits away from it. READ MORE

Humanities instructor Christopher Irving last month hosted the first “Shelf Indulgence,” a book discussion group for students and faculty masterminded by assistant library director Emily Morgan. 
 
O’Toole-ing right along
Sumter County is building utility infrastructure to pave the way for designating the forthcoming Rep. Marlene O’Toole Industrial Park as a Site Ready Sumter property. The site is named for the former state legislator, who first was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2008, and now serves at Beacon as managing director of collegiate transition. The Rep. O’Toole Industrial Park will boast an anticipated 7-million square feet of light industrial space to the east of U.S. 301.
Board games
Beacon communication director Darryl E. Owens was reconfirmed to the board of directors for Community Health Centers, Inc. for 2022-2023. Established in 1972, Community Health Centers operates 16 medical and dental centers throughout Orange and Lake counties, serving nearly 70,000 patients each year, including students at Beacon College.
Tower Power
Beacon associate art professor Russ Bellamy joined roughly 100 visual, performing, and literary artists whose works were featured last month during the Leesburg Arts Fuse Festival. The two-day festival, presented by The Leesburg Center for the Arts, graced Main Street in Downtown Leesburg, where Bellamy shared four of his large metal sculptures for a pop-up 3D installation.
Learning to bounce back
Learning specialist Melissa Mayor earned a professional certificate from Florida State University in College Student Well-being, Trauma, and Resilience. She also recently gained membership in the Academic Resilience Consortium, an association of faculty, staff, and students in higher education who are dedicated to understanding and promoting student resilience.
Seeing life through sea life
For Sarah Pozzi, ’20, a passion for animal welfare and the drive to prove doubters wrong about her abilities are the active ingredients in conjuring up a dedicated conservationist and animal advocate. READ MORE
