Book 'em
Almost a decade ago, the popular cable series “The Librarians” hurdled onto the small screen with a team of super-smart heroes who used their powers to battle mysterious foes and save the world from dangerous magic. At Beacon College, chief librarian Gretchen Dreimiller and her team may not be superheroes, but they are certainly using all their powers to transform the traditional campus information hub into a modern, energized haven of learning in a dramatically changing landscape. READ MORE

Smooth(er) sailing
With five decades under his belt, James Avery isn’t the average Beacon College student. But what brought Avery, a retired Navy communications specialist and non-traditional student in his first year at Beacon, to campus and motivates him to succeed is a promise made long ago to his family that he would get a college education. From his parents to his 11 siblings, especially an older sister who became his mentor, he stands on the shoulders of giants – many of whom are now passed from this world. READ MORE

Fashion as funding

Pictured are officers and members of GSA at the donation site.
Taking out the trash
The Beacon College Green Team doesn’t take any trash. But they will clean it up. That reflex was on display in April as some 30 students, staff, and faculty members aligned with the college’s ecology/environmental group and joined forces for a volunteer clean-up day at Venetian Gardens Park in Leesburg, Florida. They filled five extra-large trash bags with garbage. Dr. A.J. Marsden, an associate professor in the department of human services and psychology, helped spearhead the effort and estimated they removed about 100 pounds of waste.

Salon Speaker Series
The April 2023 edition of the Beacon Salon Speaker Series featured journalist/author Frank Stanfield’s presentation, “How to cover the craziest crime story without going crazy yourself (allegedly).” The talk focused on the slaying of the parents of a vampire cultist in Eustis, Florida, in 1996, which sparked international headlines and examines Constitutional battles over free press vs. a defendant’s right to a fair trial, mental illness, the treatment of juveniles in the justice system, fascination with the occult, comparisons to Charles Manson, spiritual warfare, sex abuse and the influence of pop culture on vulnerable teens. Click the image to watch.
"A World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity"
April’s episode of “A World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity” explores the intersection of neurodivergence and color as we learn about the challenges one neurodivergent Asian-American college student faces around lingering stigmas about learning and thinking differences and limiting racial stereotypes. An expert panel provides strategies to head off the issues that can undercut their ability to succeed and thrive. And you'll meet “Difference Maker,” Armani Williams, a neurodivergent NASCAR driver with a lifelong need for speed. Click the image to watch.

Support Beacon College through iGive
Hint: It’s even easier than AmazonSmile!
If you have chosen Beacon College as your AmazonSmile charity, we greatly appreciate your support. Unfortunately, AmazonSmile closed in February. You may not realize that we already have set up a great alternative. Join iGive today (for free) here. When you log in and shop their 2,000-plus stores (think Chewy, Walmart, Expedia and so many more), Beacon College receives donations at least TWICE what we earned through AmazonSmile. The average donation through an iGive store is about 3%, with some offering 25% or higher. It’s easy to make it all automatic by downloading the iGive Button and turning your browser into a donation-generating machine!
