Ciao, Beacon!
Nineteen Beacon students departed last month for their journey to Prato, Italy, as the Beacon in Tuscany global education resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the pause button on overseas learning. Beacon’s program is believed to be the only semester-long study abroad program for neurodivergent students. Students will feast on pizza, pasta and knowledge from September to December at the University of Florence’s campus in Prato, a town about 40 miles from Florence. Dr. Andrea Brode, Beacon’s coordinator of international programs, and Michael S. Fallon, coordinator of the Business & Technology Department, are leading the studies in “Bel Paese” (beautiful country).
Darryl E. Owens, associate vice president of communications and engagement, moderated a town hall forum for candidates running for office in the city of Groveland hosted by Groveland Works. The October edition of the 2022-23 Beacon Salon Speaker Series features David Kirby (National Book Award finalist) and Barbara Hamby (James Dicky Prize for Poetry) tell their students that the best mind you can have is the mind of the writer. Writers are magpies. They pick up shiny objects in their beaks and then fly home and put them in a certain order and show early drafts to others and incorporate (or ignore) what they say. But isn’t that what a scientist does as they set up an experiment or a lawyer as they prepare an argument for a jury or a chef as they try out a new dish? It’s all one mind. They just call it the mind of the writer. REGISTER TODAY
