Finding God at Every Corner of Our Diocese

The Spirit of God is Present at Every Corner of our Beautiful Diocese!

Although my schedule is getting busier, I am getting to the part of this calling that I was looking for: visiting congregations. This past Sunday, the Rev. Canon Jon Feuss, Canon Clare Zabala Bangao, Diocesan Missioner for Mission Congregations and I worshiped with the good people of St. Paul’s in Barstow. For more than 20 years they have been creating a community with the local Lutheran Church, and today they refer to themselves as “Two Churches, One Mission, One Family.” After the coffee hour, a few of us went to the previous Sanctuary (which had not been used for worship for more than 5 years) to deconsecrate the space. Although it was a sad moment for all present, we were reminded that this “end” has made possible a new beginning for this congregation. 

On Saturday, I continued to gather with the people from our deaneries during a visit to Deanery 9 – North Orange County, where St. Paul’s in Tustin served as a gracious host. Through questions and exchanges we got to know one another more, and all left inspired by the way that God is at work in our congregations.

This was also a week to continue to develop and strengthen relationships. I met with NMAC — a national HIV organization that offers capacity building, leadership development, policy education, and public engagement to end the HIV epidemic among communities most impacted in the United States — in preparation to serve as a keynote speaker at their annual conference in Anaheim, where more than 3,000 people will gather. I met with the planning team for the celebration of the 50 years of LGBTQ+ efforts in our church, where I will be one of the speakers talking about what is to come. I also met with the Episcopal Bishops of African Descent; gathered with our area deans; met with the Rev. Jaime Edwards-Acton and the Rev. Francisco Garcia to talk about the great work and the future of Sacred Resistance, and also with the Rev. Andy Barnett, the new Rector of All Saints Church in Beverly Hills.  

Along with staff, we joined in celebrating the good work of Amila Orucevic, Immigration Legal Services Manager at IRIS, who will be retiring at the end of the month. I facilitated my first meeting with the Corporation of the Diocese, where we discussed matters that are relevant to our diocese, including the 2027 budget.

I also dedicated time to meet with the partners that help me to stay healthy and balanced: my personal trainer, my business coach, and my psychotherapist, and of course, lots of loving time with my pup Milo.

In the week ahead, I will meet with Bishops Little and Brookhart as we prepare to start congregational visitations. I will also meet with the leaders of Bloy House, as well as the Standing Committee, the diocesan leadership team, the planning team for Diocesan Convention, a gathering of Black Clergy, and the team working on the annual Corp Sole financial audit. Also, this week I will join for the first time the monthly meeting of Bishops from Province VIII.

I will end the week spending time with the people of Deanery 10 – South Orange County on Saturday, and perform my first official visitation as your bishop to St. Matthew’s in Pacific Palisades.

Encontrando a Dios en cada esquina de nuestra Diócesis

¡El Espíritu de Dios está presente en cada rincón de nuestra hermosa Diócesis!

Aunque mi agenda se está volviendo más ocupada, estoy llegando a la parte de este llamado que tanto esperaba: visitar nuestras congregaciones. El domingo pasado, el Canónigo Feuss, la Canóniga Clare y yo adoramos junto con las personas de St. Paul’s en Barstow. Durante más de 20 años, han estado construyendo una comunidad junto con la iglesia luterana local, y hoy se refieren a sí mismos como “Dos Iglesias, Una Misión, Una Familia”. Después del café, algunos de nosotros fuimos al antiguo santuario, que no se había utilizado para el culto durante más de cinco años, para llevar a cabo su desconsagración. Aunque fue un momento triste para todos los presentes, recordamos que este “final” ha hecho posible un nuevo comienzo para esta congregación.

El sábado, continué reuniéndome con las personas de nuestros deanatos durante una visita al Deanato 9 – North Orange County, donde St. Paul’s Tustin nos recibió con gran hospitalidad. A través de preguntas e intercambios, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocernos mejor, y todos nos fuimos inspirados por la manera en que Dios está obrando en nuestras congregaciones.

Esta también fue una semana para continuar desarrollando y fortaleciendo relaciones. Me reuní con NMAC — una organización nacional dedicada al VIH que ofrece fortalecimiento de capacidades, desarrollo de liderazgo, educación sobre políticas públicas y participación comunitaria para poner fin a la epidemia del VIH entre las comunidades más afectadas en Estados Unidos — en preparación para participar como orador principal en su conferencia anual en Anaheim, donde se reunirán más de 3,000 personas del ámbito del VIH/SIDA. Me reuní con el equipo que está planificando la celebración de los 50 años de los esfuerzos LGBTQ+ en nuestra Iglesia, donde seré uno de los oradores para hablar sobre lo que está por venir. Francisco García para hablar sobre el gran trabajo y el futuro de Sacred Resistance; y también con el Rvdo. Andy Barnett, el nuevo rector de la iglesia All Saints Beverly Hills.

También facilité mi primera reunión con la Corporación de la Diócesis, en la que conversamos sobre asuntos relevantes para nuestra Diócesis, incluido el presupuesto de 2027.

También dediqué tiempo a reunirme con las personas que me ayudan a mantenerme saludable y equilibrado: mi entrenador personal, mi coach empresarial y mi psicoterapeuta y, por supuesto, pasé mucho tiempo lleno de amor con mi perrito Milo.

En la semana que viene, me reuniré con los Obispos Little y Brookhart mientras nos preparamos para comenzar las visitas a las congregaciones. Church Finance Seminar Offers Practical Guidance for Congregational Leaders

The Rev. Melissa Campbell-Langdell and Deanery 1 will host a full-day Church Financial Seminar at St. Michael’s University Church in Isla Vista on Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The seminar will be led by James Jordan, CPA and author of Financial Management for Episcopal Parishes, a widely used and thorough how-to on church finances that is used by many seminaries to teach church financial management.

The workshop is open to clergy, vestry members, finance committee members, treasurers, and other congregational leaders. Jordan describes the session as a comprehensive day in which each topic builds upon the previous one, beginning with foundational concepts and terminology and moving into practical financial responsibilities.

Topics will include an overview of canonical requirements for financial management; what constitutes church money; how to read church financial statements; the roles and responsibilities of the rector, vestry, treasurer, bookkeeper, and volunteers; fiduciary liability; internal controls and fraud prevention; and the importance of audits.

Seminario sobre finanzas de la Iglesia ofrece orientación práctica para líderes de las congregaciones

La Rvda. Melissa Campbell-Langdell y el Deanato 1 organizarán un Seminario sobre Finanzas de la Iglesia de todo un día en St. Michael’s University Church, en Isla Vista, el sábado 10 de octubre, de 9 a. m. a 5 p. m.

El seminario será dirigido por James Jordan, CPA y autor del libro Financial Management for Episcopal Parishes, una guía práctica y completa de uso generalizado sobre las finanzas de la Iglesia que muchas escuelas de teología utilizan para enseñar a sus seminaristas sobre la administración financiera de las iglesias.

El taller está abierto al clero, miembros de los consejos parroquiales (vestry), integrantes de los comités de finanzas, tesoreros y otros líderes de las congregaciones. Jordan describe la sesión como una jornada integral en la que cada tema se basa en el anterior, comenzando con conceptos y terminología fundamentales y avanzando hacia las responsabilidades financieras prácticas.

Annual Safe Church Self-Audit: A Tool for Safer Communities

Each year, every congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is asked to complete the Safe Church Self-Audit. While the annual audit helps us meet our Safe Church requirements, its larger purpose is to support congregations in the ongoing work of creating communities where children, youth, vulnerable adults, and all who participate in our common life are protected and respected.

The self-audit offers congregational leaders an opportunity to pause and reflect on their current practices. Where are our policies and procedures working well? Are there places where our practices need attention? Are the people who serve in positions of trust appropriately screened and trained? Are there changes in our ministries, programs, or community that require us to think differently about safety?

The goal is not to catch congregations doing something wrong. The audit is a tool for identifying strengths, noticing gaps, and helping congregations determine where they may need additional resources or support from the diocese. Safe Church is work we do together, and the self-audit provides a regular opportunity to ensure our practices reflect our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of vulnerable people in our communities.

Congregations do not need to complete the audit in one sitting. The form can be saved and returned to as leaders gather information, review practices, and complete each section.

Autoauditoría Anual de Iglesia Segura: Una Herramienta para Comunidades Más Seguras

Cada año, se solicita a cada congregación de la Diócesis Episcopal de Los Ángeles que complete la Autoauditoría de Iglesia Segura. Si bien la auditoría anual nos ayuda a cumplir con nuestros requisitos de Iglesia Segura, su propósito más amplio es apoyar a las congregaciones en el trabajo continuo de crear comunidades donde los niños, jóvenes, adultos vulnerables y todas las personas que participan en nuestra vida comunitaria estén protegidos y sean tratados con respeto.

La autoauditoría ofrece a los líderes de las congregaciones una oportunidad para hacer una pausa y reflexionar sobre sus prácticas actuales. ¿En qué aspectos están funcionando bien nuestras políticas y procedimientos? ¿Hay áreas en las que nuestras prácticas necesitan atención? ¿Las personas que sirven en posiciones de confianza han sido debidamente evaluadas y capacitadas? ¿Hay cambios en nuestros ministerios, programas o comunidad que requieran que pensemos de manera diferente sobre la seguridad?

El objetivo no es descubrir que las congregaciones están haciendo algo mal. La auditoría es una herramienta para identificar fortalezas, reconocer áreas que necesitan atención y ayudar a las congregaciones a determinar dónde pueden necesitar recursos adicionales o apoyo de la Diócesis. La Iglesia Segura es un trabajo que hacemos juntos, y la autoauditoría ofrece una oportunidad periódica para asegurarnos de que nuestras prácticas reflejen nuestro compromiso compartido con la seguridad y el bienestar de las personas vulnerables en nuestras comunidades.

Las congregaciones no necesitan completar la auditoría de una sola vez. El formulario se puede guardar y completar posteriormente a medida que los líderes recopilen información, revisen las prácticas y completen cada sección.
