From the Curate

“With what can we compare the kingdom of God?” Jesus ponders in this Sunday’s gospel after comparing the kingdom of God to the scattering of seed on the ground. This is the gospel in which he compares God’s kingdom to a mustard seed which grows into a great bush with branches and leaves for other creatures of God to make their nests. “With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it,” Mark writes, implying that Jesus, who pondered what might make a good metaphor for his followers to receive a glimpse of understanding, could not settle on just one.

This is the nature of God, after all, to surpass all our understanding. No title, name, or pronoun we use to speak of the source of all creation can properly encapsulate who God is. And so it follows that the reign of God too cannot be summarized in a single parable, a single metaphor, a single comparison.

Two weeks into the “green season,” and swiftly approaching the summer solstice, we are blessed with an abundance of opportunities to glimpse into God’s kingdom already coming into its fullness all around us. Seek them. Listen for them. Savor them. And be delighted by the many ways Christ speaks the word to us as we are able to hear it.

Fr Larrabee, S. Anthony of Padua,

and Fr Lawler

Thursday, June 13 at 8 a.m.

Thursday, June 13 offers a significant liturgical and personal confluence at the Church of the Ascension. All in one day we will remember the Baptismal anniversary and year's mind of our 10th Rector, Fr Larrabee; the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, under whose patronage Ascension's food pantry operates; and the 80th birthday of our beloved priest associate, Fr Lawler.

Please join us as we celebrate this wonderful convergence at our weekly Thursday 8:00 a.m. Mass, followed by a festive breakfast in Wheeler Hall.

1125 Open House Tour

Sunday, June 16

Following the Solemn High Mass on Sunday, June 16, we will be offering a tour of 1125, the former Saint Anne's Convent. During coffee hour we will gather in the Our Lady of Victory garden and then head on a group tour. In order to accommodate parishioners, please RSVP using this link: http://bit.ly/3R4Vtwt

Chrys' Closet: Children’s Summer Day

Saturday, June 15 from 10 - 11:30 a.m.

In preparation for summer, our partners at Chrys' Closet will be offering a children's activity day in the Our Lady of Victory garden. Families will receive summer care packages and a copy of a new bilingual book, The Place Where I Belong, written by a Chrys' Closet volunteer. We are looking for two to four volunteers from Ascension to help welcome families, assist with the distribution of snacks and care packages, and children's activities. If you wish to volunteer, please email Fr de la Torre.

March with the Diocese of Chicago in the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade

On June 30, members of the Diocese of Chicago will march in the 2024 Pride Parade with the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches. The parade officially kicks off at 11 a.m. from Sheridan and Broadway in Uptown and treks through the north side of the city, ending near the intersection of Diversey Parkway and Sheridan Road in Lincoln Park.

Parishioners who wish to participate are encouraged to attend the 9 a.m. Sung Mass to meet their dominical obligation and depart together as a group. Comfortable walking clothes and shoes, water bottles, and sunscreen lotion are recommended. Please email Ellie Simpson at elizabeth.robertssdg@gmail.com for more information.

Consider being a Coffee Hour host

There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.

If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People

As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
