From the Curate
To God’s people of the Old Testament, the locus of revelation was the ear. In other words, what was revealed by God, was experienced primarily via the ear, through listening. This is why Elizabeth said to Mary, “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord” (Luke 1:45, emphasis added). It is why Israel is told to “hear” in Deuteronomy, and why Samuel responds, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” when he is called by God (1 Sam. 3:9). Examples abound in the New Testament as well, and none more saliently than in John 1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The culture we live in today deemphasizes the importance of listening when it comes to experiencing truth. We prefer the eyes as discerners of what is and what isn’t and tend to dismiss God entirely. “Seeing is believing,” is our culture’s mantra.
We hear the beginning of John’s Gospel proclaimed on Christmas morning and again the Sunday after Christmas. Hearing it twice is a good opportunity to be reminded of the importance of listening for God and to God in our lives as the calendar year winds down and we busy ourselves with plans for the New Year. As you make your resolutions and anticipate the new things that await you in 2024, I pray that you allow your ears to open to what God is saying to you.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
