From the Curate

I am pleased to announce that Ascension is entering a new partnership with an outreach initiative from St. Chrysostom. For the past several months, St. Chrys has been hosting a free “shop” on Wednesdays for newly arriving migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. You may have even already read about this wonderful program in the Diocesan newsletter or read about how it is a part of how our diocese is responding to the influx of migrants on Episcopal News Service. Beginning this week, the shop will begin to migrate over to St. Michael Hall, its new location. This partnership was voted upon unanimously by the Vestry and has the full support of the Outreach Committee, Fr. Heard, and of course, me.

This partnership began in June when Fr. Will Bouvel from St. Chrys reached out to me. He told me that the space where the shop is currently located would no longer be available to them. Over the next couple weeks, I sent members of the Vestry and Outreach Committee members to visit the shop to see it in action. Fr. Heard, the Vestry and Outreach and I then continued to have many conversations about whether and how we could successfully host the shop in St. Michael Hall, and by the July Vestry meeting, the partnership received unanimous approval.

The shop is beginning its move to St. Michael Hall this week, with a full move anticipated next Wednesday, August 16. Things will be bustling and busy the rest of the week as it prepares to open in its new location Wednesday, August 23.

In the coming weeks, I will be sharing more information about how you can get involved and participate. For now, please hold off on donating items, as we allow the program to get resettled in its new location. As with any transition, we anticipate the possibility of running into “pinch points.” I ask for the blessing of your patience as we navigate this new territory for us. I pray that we all have the grace to be kind and loving hosts to our guests from St. Chrys and the guests who will be using the shop. Please reach out if you have any questions.

This is truly an exciting time for Ascension, and I am so grateful to be walking alongside you as we experience the possibilities that this new partnership can offer.

Prayer Requests

Do you have a need for special prayer in your life? Whether your prayer needs are because you have an upcoming surgery, an ill family member, or you’re just feeling particularly lonely lately, Fr. Heard and Mtr. Murphy-Gill would like to know.

We’ve created a way for letting us know about your requests for prayers in a way we hope makes it easy for you to reach out, though you can always call the church or reach out to one of the priests personally.

Share your prayer requests here.
