Dear Faculty, Trainees, and Staff,
I hope everyone is taking time this summer to unplug from work, connect with family and friends, and recharge. Rebalancing helps us return to campus with renewed focus and clarity, so that we can start the FY 2025 with new ideas.
And as anyone who attended Dean Gladwin’s GenMD brainstorming session last month can tell you, new ideas are what we’re looking for! For our faculty members, if you haven’t already, I encourage you to check out the GenMD Strategic Plan to help users decide where to focus your implementation efforts.
And speaking of new ideas and change, I also want to acknowledge the historical significance of the moment we are in, as a woman of color prepares to accept a major party nomination for the Presidency for the first time in United States history. At the same time, I am also thinking of Dvontaye Mitchell, a 43-year-old black man who was killed by law enforcement officers while unarmed and laying on the ground in Milwaukee, Wisconsin last month, as well as the killing of Sonya Massey in her own home by police officers after calling 911 for help.
Times like these are full of reminders of both the progress we have made as a country, and sobering reminders of the work that remains to be done. I hope that we keep both of these in mind as we all leverage the tremendous resources and talent in our Department towards helping to build a better, more inclusive future.

Sincerely,
Jill A. RachBeisel, MD

Our Department was the top fundraising team for 2024 NAMI Walks Maryland, with 54 team members participating! This means we outraised 180 other teams in supporting NAMI's mission to help deliver free mental health counseling and treatment to individuals all over Maryland.
On a related note, I want to highlight one faculty member who has been a standout contributor for years. Dr. Stephanie Knight has donated 46 pieces of art over the last 3 years to the Art Exhibition, bringing in over $1,300 for our auctions.
Thank you, Stephanie!

Dr. Meg Woodbury has recently returned to work after maternity leave--and has given us an update on little Nate, who was born last April!
Nate loves daycare and is doing well there. The center sends Meg daily photos of him laughing or smiling.
We want to thank all of Meg's colleagues who have been fantastic and supportive during her leave.
Welcome to the world, Nate Woodbury... and welcome back, Meg!
