Dear MAS partners and friends,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend and the holiday in recognition of one of my heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King. I hope you took a moment to reflect on what he lived and eventually died for.
Most of America is aware of Dr. King’s most famous speech titled, “I Have a Dream.” That speech may forever be remembered as the most inspiring and convicting call to equal rights and the end to racism. What most don’t know is that Dr. King’s latest work and last speeches were focused on poverty and the policies and conditions that keep individuals and families in poverty.
In his final sermon before his death he eloquently stated, “for many, poverty is a long desolate highway with no exit ramp”. Those words ring true today.
For far too many families the highway of poverty is cemented with poor performing schools
. These schools make it easier to lose hope than to love learning. As it stands, a child in poverty is more likely to drop out of high school before their second year than to enter college for their second semester.
I believe (as should you) that MAS is an exit ramp off this highway of poverty. Our school outperforms all others serving the same demographics. 100% of our seniors have graduated for FIVE years in a row. Our graduates are attending prestigious colleges like the University of Virginia and UW-Madison andlocal colleges like UW-Parkside and MATC.
Education, graduation, college matriculation....these are true exit ramps to self-sufficiency.
Our students are hope for their families. Our students are the future leaders of Milwaukee.
Thank you so much for supporting Milwaukee Academy of Science...an exit ramp paved with love and kindness.
We continue the legacy of Dr. King by helping to educate kids living in poverty so they can choose self-sufficiency, not poverty, as adults.
