Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With the passage of two of the holiest days of the religious year, it is time to reflect.

Passover exemplifies the Jewish people's faith in God to protect them from adversity. This is especially profound in these trying times, from the Oct. 7 attacks to the antisemitism shown on American streets.

For Christians, Easter is an embodiment of life after death. This is especially relevant in light of Pope Francis's passing.

Whether you are religious or not, the sacredness embodied in these two great religions carry a message to all that we, as children of God, are all connected by a mutual love.

Very Truly Yours,

Maria Sachs, Commissioner

As your Palm Beach County Commissioner, I’m thrilled to share an extraordinary moment of pride and celebration for our community; West Boca Raton Community High School has achieved a historic milestone by winning the Class 6A State Football Championship. Completing a perfect 15-0 season under Principal Edmund Capitano, the Bulls secured a commanding 26-7 victory over Kissimmee Osceola in the championship game, marking the first state football title for any Palm Beach County team in over a decade. This victory reflects the team’s athletic excellence, strength, discipline and resilience that define our local youth. I extend heartfelt congratulations to Head Coach Dylan Potts for his outstanding leadership, to quarterbacks Mason Mallory and Trey Moran for their poise and performance under pressure, and to star receiver Mark Hanniford for delivering game-changing plays. The entire team, coaching staff and school community have given us all something to be proud of. This is more than a win on the scoreboard—it is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through unity, perseverance and passion. Go Bulls!

I was honored to participate in the recent Coalition of Boynton Beach Residents (COBWRA) Installation of Officers and Directors, a celebration of leadership and community commitment that continues to make our neighborhoods stronger and more united. This year’s ceremony, held at Valencia Shores, was an excellent reflection of the dedication and service that define COBWRA and its mission to advocate for the well-being of Boynton Beach residents. I offer my warmest congratulations to Barbara Roth on her installation as COBWRA President, along with Debbie Murphy as First Vice President and Irwin Cohen as Second Vice President. Their leadership, alongside the many devoted members of COBWRA, plays a vital role in fostering collaboration, civic engagement, and progress throughout our region. I look forward to supporting their efforts and working together to keep our communities vibrant and thriving.

I was honored to join the Elder Services Resource Network (ESRN) for their recent meeting and officer installation ceremony at Cascades in Delray Beach. This gathering of dedicated professionals reflects the strength of our shared commitment to supporting the needs of older adults throughout Palm Beach County. ESRN’s mission is significant to me, as so many residents within my district rely on access to quality elder services, including healthcare, housing and wellness resources that allow them to age with dignity and security. The well-being of our senior community remains one of my top priorities, and I believe that through collaboration with organizations like ESRN, we can continue to build a network of care that uplifts our aging population. If you or someone you know is in need of elder services, please do not hesitate to contact my office. We are here to help connect you with the support and resources you deserve.

Coming up in PBC: Shadowood Spotlight

Shadowood Square has long been a centerpiece of the west Boca Raton community, and its thoughtful redevelopment offers an opportunity to revitalize the area and foster greater inclusivity and economic opportunity. As we move forward with this project, my focus remains on ensuring that this space reflects the heart and spirit of our community. Residents can gather, connect, and enjoy meaningful experiences in this place. I am especially excited about the plan to include a community bookstore as part of the new Shadowood design. A brand-new Barnes & Noble has recently opened its doors in our county, and I look forward to the possibility of welcoming a similar space in West Boca. Please let my office know if you know of a bookstore you recommend. Bringing a bookstore into this development will help recapture the connection and vibrancy that defined Shadowood Square when it first opened. Together, we can ensure this project serves the evolving needs of our residents and creates a true destination for learning, engagement, and community.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how its animals are treated," as Gandhi so powerfully reminded us. Here in Palm Beach County, the treatment of our most vulnerable animals—from dogs and cats to horses, cattle, goats, and even birds—reflects our values as a community. Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control is critical in safeguarding these animals, responding to neglect, abuse and abandonment cases professionally and compassionately.

In recognition of the importance of bringing those who mistreat animals to justice, I recently arranged a meeting with State Attorney Alexcia Cox and the dedicated prosecutors who handle animal cruelty cases. Together with Todd Bonlarron, Assistant County Administrator; Stephanie Sejnoha, Director of Public Safety; David Walesky, Assistant Director of ACC; and Damon Nunn, Animal Control Operations Manager, we discussed ways to strengthen coordination between ACC and the State Attorney’s Office. Our focus was on improving communication, enhancing transparency, and ensuring that these cases are addressed swiftly and fairly.

I am grateful for the partnership of these committed leaders as we work together to uphold the safety, dignity, and well-being of animals across Palm Beach County.

Protecting Ourselves from AI Fraud in 2025

Fraud is evolving faster than ever, and artificial intelligence is at the heart of the latest scams targeting our residents, especially older adults. In one heartbreaking case, a man discovered his mother had been defrauded of over $800,000 through a series of romance scams. These crimes are no longer limited to suspicious emails or robocalls; today's scammers use AI to craft realistic messages, mimic voices and impersonate trusted companies or celebrities. From tech-support pop-ups and fake job offers to phony cryptocurrency schemes, these attacks are increasingly personalized and convincing, posing a serious risk to our community's financial and emotional well-being.

Palm Beach County residents should be especially vigilant. AARP's March/April 2025 Bulletin comprehensively examines how scams are being reengineered using AI to exploit trust and emotions. Impersonation scams using deepfakes, fraudulent “card-declined” messages, and fake celebrity endorsements are among the most common threats reported. Additionally, employment fraud is rising, with criminals posing as real human resources managers to steal sensitive information. I encourage everyone to explore the AARP Fraud Watch Network, which provides essential resources, support, and reporting tools to help individuals and families fight back. Learn more at www.aarp.org/bulletin and share this information with those you care about. Together, we can stay informed, alert and protect one another.

Animal Care & Control Spotlight: Simba

In Palm Beach County, we believe every life matters, including the lives of animals who depend on us for compassion and care. I want to share the story of Simba, a five-year-old dog at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control whose future hangs in the balance. Simba is a loving, playful, gentle dog who gets along well with children and other dogs with proper introductions. Despite having undergone a tail amputation due to "Happy Tail" and facing some ongoing health issues, Simba’s spirit remains full of affection and loyalty.

Simba was recently named the Palm Beach Post Pet of the Week, a recognition that reflects his uniqueness. Despite this honor, his situation is urgent. The shelter has issued a Rescue Request for Simba, which means that without a rescue placement, foster or adopter, he will face euthanasia. His foster caregiver, who has cared for him on and off, describes him as one of the most loving animals she has ever encountered, but she can no longer continue caring for him alone. Simba needs help now.

Fortunately, there is hope. Furry Friends has generously agreed to cover all of Simba’s medical needs. In addition, Shelter Sisters is offering to pay for his food for an entire year to support any new foster or adoptive family. The resources are in place—what’s missing is a home. If you or someone you know can help, please contact Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control at (561) 233-1200 or visit pbcanimalcare.org.

Simba deserves a chance to live, love, and be loved in return. Let’s come together as a community to ensure he gets that chance.

If you want to adopt additional shelter animals needing a loving home, visit the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Division's SNAP website here.

Dear Commissioner

Where can I find "cool spaces" in Palm Beach County to shelter from the intense heat of the spring and summer months?

All residents should practice heat safety during these hot and humid days. A heat index of 100 degrees and higher is possible in interior areas, and 100 to 105 degrees and higher in metro areas on especially sweltering spring and summer days.

With that in mind, make sure to check out the county map below for a full list of where to cool off at one of Palm Beach County's many parks:
