"It's May, the Merry Month of May"

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As we make our way through spring, I am reminded of the incredible energy and compassion that define Palm Beach County. From expanding access to affordable housing to supporting our first responders and strengthening our neighborhoods, it is clear that we can create real and lasting change when we come together. Every effort, big or small, helps to build a stronger, more connected community.

This season also brings new opportunities to volunteer and give back. Whether through programs supporting individuals with special needs, community beautification projects or neighborhood events, there are countless ways to get involved. Volunteering uplifts those we serve and deepens our ties to the community we call home.

As always, your voice matters. I encourage everyone to stay engaged, share their ideas and take part in shaping our county's future. Together, we will continue building Palm Beach County into a community where opportunity, kindness and progress are within reach for all.

Together with you,

Maria Sachs, Commissioner

The Healing Power of Pets

Each month, we enjoy highlighting a dog or cat at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control waiting for a loving home. While fostering or adopting one of these pets is life-changing for the animal, the benefits to the new pet owner are equally profound.

A 2022 study from the American Heart Association linked pet ownership to lower blood pressure, reduced stress, improved immune function and increased physical activity - all of which contribute to longer, healthier lives. Another study from Washington State University showed that just 10 minutes of interaction with a dog or cat can significantly lower cortisol levels. Likewise, a meta-analysis in BMC Psychiatry found that animal interactions can reduce symptoms of PTSD, depression and anxiety. I encourage everyone to consider fostering or adopting one of our county animals — a gift that offers healing and happiness on both ends of the leash.

This month, we are also proud to share the story of a recently adopted dog who is now being trained as a therapy companion for veterans with PTSD. It is a beautiful example of how our animals can transform lives. If you are interested in opening your heart and home to a pet in need, contact Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control at 561-233-1200 or pbcacc@pbcgov.org.

When we save a pet, we often save ourselves in ways we never imagined.

Building Communities, Not Suburbs

According to Bloomberg News, 3,000 New Yorkers fled the city for Florida's Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties from 2018 through 2022. Housing is becoming more important than ever. It is not enough to build more houses; we must build lasting, vibrant communities. That means looking beyond the outdated model of isolated developments and embracing a comprehensive approach that prioritizes diversity, sustainability, affordability and connectivity. We need zoning and planning policies that support mixed-use spaces, walkable neighborhoods, attainable housing options and access to public transportation, jobs, schools and services. Authentic community-building means ensuring that residents of all income levels have a place to live with dignity. Our future success will depend on designing neighborhoods that foster belonging, strengthen human connection and preserve the unique character of Palm Beach County — not on expanding sprawl, deepening socioeconomic divides or building suburbs. Next week, we'll follow new advancements for housing the homeless.

Honoring Our Local Heroes

The Boca Raton/Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce honored our local heroes during the First Responders Award Luncheon. It was a privilege to join fellow residents, civic leaders and public safety professionals in paying tribute to those who dedicate their lives to protecting and caring for others. Detective Sean Steele was named Police Officer of the Year for his outstanding work in law enforcement, Firefighter Darren Clarke was honored as Fire Fighter of the Year for his bravery and commitment and Firefighter/Paramedic Freddie Ramirez was recognized as Paramedic of the Year for his tireless efforts in emergency medical care. The luncheon served as a heartfelt reminder of how essential our first responders are to the safety and well-being of Palm Beach County. Their courage, compassion and professionalism inspire us all, and I was proud to stand among those expressing sincere gratitude for their service.

Locals Speak Out at Cypresses of Boca Lago

PBC Commissioner Maria Sachs conversed with and took questions from an enthusiastic crowd of local residents from the Cypresses of Boca Lago community located in Boca Raton (Photo Source: Office of Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sachs, District 5)

The Cypresses of Boca Lago residents have strong views regarding further development in their community. I met with many of them to hear their concerns. I value the chance to listen directly to the voices of our residents, many of whom shared thoughtful perspectives on growth, planning and the importance of preserving the unique fabric of their community. The feedback I received at this meeting was essential in shaping how we approach land use and development across Palm Beach County. I remain committed to ensuring that every proposed project is carefully considered in light of its long-term effects on our residents and neighborhoods. Open dialogue with communities like Cypresses of Boca Lago is how we build better policy and a better future for everyone.

Upcoming Public Hearing on West Boynton Ranches Development Proposal

A new development project dubbed "West Boynton Ranches" is being proposed for a plot of land directly south of Boynton Beach Blvd. and to the east of Lyons Road (specifically, the south side of Boynton Beach Blvd., approximately 0.2 mile west of Lyons Road, and the south side of Happy Hollow Road, approximately 0.10 mile east of State Road 7). Sixty-five of the homes built would be considered workforce housing.

As your Palm Beach County Commissioner, I invite you to participate in an essential public hearing regarding the proposed West Boynton Ranches development (LGA 2025-012). This proposal seeks to amend the Future Land Use designation of 32.35 acres from Agricultural Reserve (AGR) to Essential Housing with an underlying Agricultural Reserve (EH/AGR). The plan includes developing up to 259 residential units, with 25% designated as on-site workforce housing.

The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners is reviewing this application on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at the Palm Beach County Governmental Center, 301 N. Olive Ave., 6th Floor Commission Chambers, West Palm Beach, 33401. This is your opportunity to ask questions, share your thoughts and ensure your voice is heard. Public input is essential to making balanced, community-driven decisions. If you want to provide comments or questions, please email my office at District5@pbc.gov. Dear Commissioner

What do I need to know about the new and upcoming

REAL ID requirements for domestic air travel?

Starting May 7, anyone 18 or older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID to fly within the U.S.

If you plan to use your ID at the airport, look for a star at the top of the card—that means it’s REAL ID-ready. If not, visit your local DMV or Tax Collector’s office to get one that meets the new requirements.

More details are available at: tsa.gov/real-id.
