Memorial Day Edition
| | |
Dear Veterans, Friends and Neighbors:
Each year, Memorial Day stands as a powerful reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by generations of brave Americans in defense of our nation’s freedom.
| | |
It is not simply a day marked by tradition—it is a day of reflection, gratitude, and unwavering respect for those who have given their lives in service to the United States.
Here in Palm Beach County, I am honored to join with Veterans, families, and community members this Memorial Day in paying tribute to all who served and continue serving in our armed forces.

That commitment to action has been a defining principle throughout my public service. During my tenure as a Florida State Senator, I was proud to secure the funding necessary to establish the first Veterans Success Center. Located on the grounds of Palm Beach State College, the center’s central mission has been to help Veterans successfully transition into academic life.
Since its opening, the Veterans Success Center has become and continues to serve as a trusted and essential resource for countless Veteran students, offering key academic support, pertinent career guidance, and essential mental health services.
| | Throughout my longstanding career in government and public service, I have proudly championed initiatives that directly support Veterans and their families, such as securing funding for mental health services, expanding access to affordable housing for homeless Veterans, and advocating for job training programs to assist our Veterans with their transition to civilian life. | | Senator Maria Sachs meeting with various heads of Veteran groups from throughout the State of Florida. Russell F. Lorts (dec), United States Army Infantry - WWII and Vietnam. | | This day also carries personal meaning for me. My late father, Lt. Col. Russell F. Lorts (dec), was a United States Army Infantry officer who served in both World War II and Vietnam. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds sustained during fierce combat in North Africa. Though he rarely spoke of his experiences, his quiet strength and lifelong devotion to our nation left an indelible impression on me. It is through his example—and the stories of countless other Veterans—that I have come to understand the courage and resilience of those who wear the uniform. | | |
To the men and women currently serving, to those who have served, and to the families who have shared in their sacrifice—on behalf of my family, my office, and the people of Palm Beach County—we salute you, we honor you, and we thank you. Your service and your sacrifice have preserved the liberties we hold dear. You are the reason this nation remains a beacon of freedom, and we remain forever in your debt.
May we never take our freedoms for granted, and may we always remember those who gave all.
God bless you, God bless our Veterans, and God bless the United States of America!

Here in Palm Beach County, compassion isn’t just a value—it’s a commitment we live by, especially for animals who cannot speak for themselves.
One morning, a soaking-wet and emaciated German Shepherd appeared at my door. I gave her food, water, and a safe place to rest. A Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control rabies tag helped identify her as a lost pet in need of care. Despite her hardships, she remained gentle and trusting.
Thanks to the compassion of Semper Fi Service Dogs Inc. Executive Director Ryan Onda, she was welcomed into their training program and given the new name “Penny.” She is now on a path to becoming a service dog for someone living with PTSD or developmental disabilities. Many thanks also to the devoted staff at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for their support and assistance in helping this lost dog find a loving home.
With kindness and commitment, we can restore health, hope, and purpose to animals in need.
To learn more about the wonderful work done by Ryan Onda and to support this noble cause, please contact Semper Fi Service Dogs Inc. by phone at (561) 951-2001 or via email at ryan@semperfiservicedogs.org.
| | What can I do to assist Veterans in Palm Beach County? | | |
As part of an ongoing effort to address the unique challenges faced by Veterans, the Palm Beach County Veterans Services Division encourages local residents to get involved in a variety of support initiatives. These include volunteer mentorship programs, resource navigation assistance, and participation in housing stability efforts for homeless and at-risk Veterans.
While many deserving Veterans are eligible for federal benefits, navigating the complex systems of data and expansive digital networks required to access these public resources can be overwhelming without local guidance and support from others.
| |
This is especially true for Veterans coping with physical disabilities, psychiatric disorders, or substance use challenges. In this context, Palm Beach County residents like you can make a meaningful difference by stepping up as community partners. Your support can help our most vulnerable Veterans gain access to medical care, secure permanent housing, and, ultimately, make a successful transition into civilian life.
| Accordingly, in honor of this Memorial Day, I especially encourage all willing county residents to learn how they can make a difference—whether through direct service, donations, or advocacy on behalf of those who have served. | For more information about the Palm Beach County Veterans Services Division, as well as other local programs, services, and opportunities to assist Veterans in our community, please visit discover.pbc.gov/communityservices/seniorservices/Pages/Veteran-Services.aspx. | | |
