Vol. 8, Iss. 7
Feb. 23, 2017

Dear Parents:

We have an amazing staff at Ben Franklin Academy! Each staff member is vital to BFA's success, and the expertise and passion they bring to their individual roles defines who we are as a school. I am thankful to work with all of our staff members, and recognize the ways they go above and beyond the call of duty every day to do what's best for our students.

Each year, Douglas County School District asks the community to nominate teachers and support staff members who demonstrate excellence in their field for the Apple Award. Based on recommendations from our parent community, the District selects one licensed staff member and one support staff member to represent our school and attend the Apple Award ceremony on May 4, where the finalists and 2017 Apple Award winners will be announced. Today, I'm especially happy to announce that Michelle Bynum and Candice McGinty will represent BFA for the District's 2017 Apple Awards!

Michelle Bynum played an integral role at BFA as a founding family member, and now serves the school as an Office Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. BFA's students, parents and staff benefit from Michelle's expertise, sense of humor and her incredible ability to remember names.

Candice McGinty has been a teacher for more than 10 years. She started at BFA as a long-term substitute, and was hired as a full-time first grade teacher three years ago. Mrs. McGinty is a warm and caring teacher, and a strong proponent of the Core Knowledge curriculum.

We are very proud of our BFA representatives! They are both amazing at what they do and I am honored to present them as our nominees.

Sincerely,

Bob Barber
Survey
BE SURE TO COMPLETE THE PARENT SATISFACTION SURVEY

Be sure to take BFA's Parent Satisfaction Survey   today!  Don't miss out on this important opportunity for your voice to be heard; the survey will be open from now until the end of February. To date, we have heard from 226 of our 492 families, which is about a 46 percent response rate. Your input is key to understanding what parents love about BFA, as well as identifying areas of improvement. Ten lucky participants who give their family number (located on your carpool tag) will be selected for a $25 gift card of your choice.
SEEKING LEADERS FOR OPEN BOARD POSITIONS

Your community is seeking leaders who are passionate and committed to BFA's mission and vision to serve on the BFA Board of Directors. This year, there are three (3) open director seats on the BFA Board, which will be filled according to the Board of Directors Election Policy. Each seat is for a 3-year term. Two (2) directors will be elected by the Parent Voting Group, and the other director will be appointed by the BFA Board. Specifically, the following seats are open:

  • Class C Seats 5 and 6 are currently occupied by Becky Mullen and Paige Brock, respectively. They have each served on the Board since 2010. Having served two (2) consecutive terms, they are ineligible to serve on the Board this year. These seats each serve a 3-year term, ending in May 2020, and are elected by the Parent Voting Group.
  • Class C Seat 7 is currently occupied by Matt Warder. Matt has served on the Board since 2013 and is not seeking reappointment. This seat serves a 3-year term, ending in May 2020, and is appointed by the BFA Board.

Nominations from the BFA Parent Voting Group MUST be submitted online no later than 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28.  To nominate yourself or someone else, please click here

There will be a Board candidate forum/Q&A session at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, in the BFA Library, before the regularly scheduled Board meeting. All Board nominees are encouraged to be there for at the forum/Q&A session.

Voting by the Parent Voting Group for the two (2) open elected seats will take place electronically from Monday, April 3, through Friday, April 7. Each family within the Parent Voting Group can vote for one candidate for each available elected seat. Results of the election will be announced and the appointment by the Board will made on Tuesday, April 11, at the regularly scheduled Board meeting.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
