Weekly Update
A Message from Principal Simpson
Dear Parents,
It's great to have everyone back in the building after break and we're looking forward to a terrific second half of the school year!

The Uniform Committee would like your feedback on adding additional uniform vendors. Please complete this short survey by Sunday, Jan. 17. Your feedback will be shared with the Board of Directors at their next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Each month, we feature some of the students who were recognized for displaying one or more of the 13 Virtues. The virtue for December was Frugality. We describe the virtue of frugality as: The expectation is to be frugal. Do not waste the school's resources. Respect what you have been given. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Congratulations to all the students who were recognized for the virtue of Frugality in December, and to our two featured eighth graders (below).

As usual, if there is anything you'd like to discuss, please send me an email.

We've got you Covered for Dinner Next Tuesday!
Get dinner and support BFA at the Chick-fil-A Spirit Night next Tuesday, Jan. 12. Stop by the Chick-fil-A in Highlands Ranch Town Center (950 Cpl. Max Donahue Lane) any time between 5-8 p.m. Be sure to mention the Ben Franklin Academy fundraiser to the cashier (or, if you order through the Chik-Fil-A mobile app, please put ‘BFA Spirit Night’ in the notes) so that the school gets credit for your purchase!
Message from Nutrition Services
DCSD Nutrition Services has let us know that every Friday this month there is a manager's special.Tomorrow, the special is a Bistro Box containing mini cinnamon rolls, string cheese and sunflower seeds. If you have any questions, contact Holly Long, the Nutrition Services kitchen manager.

Also, did you know that you can review your student's lunch purchases on MySchoolBucks? Just click on Meal Accounts on the top navigation bar, then Cafeteria Meal History. It won't tell you which entree your student selects each day, but it will show you any additional items (doubles, snacks) your student has purchased.

Sweetheart Ball Moved to Spring
The PTO has made the decision to postpone this year's Sweetheart Ball originally scheduled for later this month. Please mark your calendars as all BFA girls and their special adult guest will be invited for an evening of dancing and fun on Saturday, April 24. Event details are still to be determined, but this event will replace the Spring Social. (Since the boys had an event last year and the girls did not, the PTO wanted to make sure the girls were able to attend a special event this year.)

The PTO truly appreciates your patience and understanding as they work to plan and host socially responsible events during this pandemic. If you are interested in helping plan or organize the Sweetheart Ball, please email Alissa Motazedi, PTO social coordinator.
Changes to Vision and Hearing Screenings in 2021
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need for physical distancing and maintaining cohorts, school vision and hearing screenings will be modified this year. The Colorado Department of Education has recommended the following:
Conduct in-person screening of the following sets of students:
  • All kindergarten students.
  • Students being evaluated for or are on an Individualized Education Program.
  • Students who have no record of a hearing and/or vision screening at school.
  • Students who failed their previous hearing and/or vision screening and no referral has been completed/returned.
  • Students who are referred due a hearing and/or vision concern by a staff member or parent/guardian.

With these recommendations in mind, we will screen all students in the above-mentioned categories on Monday, Feb. 1, and Tuesday, Feb. 2. If you have concerns regarding your child’s vision and/or hearing, please notify Dianne Nugen, BFA's nurse consultant, of your concern and request for screening by Monday, Jan. 11.
It is important to note that this is a screening, not a complete exam.

If your child wears prescription glasses or contacts, it is necessary that he/she wear them during the screening.

You will receive a letter if your child does not pass the screening. Students who do not pass the screening should be evaluated by a health care professional. Please take the letter to your appointment and have the provider complete the form and return it to the school’s health office or school nurse.

The school has contracted with Tender Care Consulting, LLC to conduct the screenings.

Parents of student’s in the to be screened categories listed above may opt their child out of the screening by providing a written request to opt out of vision and/or hearing screening.

Thank you for your assistance and understanding as we work out new processes to keep everyone health.
Register for Middle School Basketball Tryouts
We have confirmation and approval from CHSAA that Boys and Girls basketball will start Jan. 18. Ben Franklin Academy will follow CHSAA and the rules they have implemented for boys and girls basketball this season.

We will have boys tryouts from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, and Wednesday, Jan. 20. Girls will have tryouts from 4 - 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, and Thursday, Jan. 21.

Registration for tryouts will be open on Monday, Jan. 11, through the MySchoolBucks portal. Once the coaches decide on teams, you'll receive a separate email from one of the coaches and you'll need to register your student for the team he/she made.

Practice/Games: We're planning to be creative with our schedule so please understand that we'll all have to be flexible. Boys and girls will practice one day during the week, either on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Tuesday and Thursday will still be game days. As of now, games will start the week of Jan. 28. The schedule is on the school calendar, but it is subject to change.

Again, the season will look a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league has agreed on the following rules:

1. No fans at the games.
2. Players, coaches, and refs will have to wear a mask on the court and on the bench.
3. Temperature checks will be issued before practices and games before entering a gym.

Please email Coach Macias if you have any questions.

BFA's Guiding Principles
Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.

Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social emotional development, character, sports, and nature.

13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
