Vol. 9, Iss. 11
March 28, 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and fun spring break. The rest of the year is going to fly right by--every year, it seems that within a blink of an eye April and May are over. There is so much happening here at BFA in the next several weeks, including field trips, performances, and state testing. Please keep an eye on your teachers' websites, as they will have up-to-date information posted about events that involve your children.

State testing (CMAS) for students in grades 3-8 will begin the week of April 8. These tests are important for several reasons. They give us critical information about how our students are learning and we use the results to help drive decision-making around staffing, curriculum, and programming. As our mission states, we are a data-driven institution, so having accurate data is very important.

Additionally, these tests are important because the results are communicated to the wider community and reflect how Ben Franklin Academy is doing as a school. Testing results are used for our School Performance Framework (which was used to renew our charter this year) and the results dictate how our "grade" is determined on the School Grades website. It was our CMAS results from last year that led us to win the John Irwin Award for 2018. Our goal is to continue to earn that award, as well as others, based on our students' academic achievement and growth.

In order for us to have the most accurate information, we need to have strong participation in our testing sessions. Students have been preparing all year and this is their opportunity to show off all they've learned. Please see the schedule below for testing sessions and times (these are also listed on the school calendar). It would be very helpful if appointments and other activities are not scheduled during these testing times. We appreciate your help with this. Students who arrive late, will not be allowed into class during the testing time, so it is important that students arrive on time.

Sincerely,

Diana Simpson

NEXT WEEK IS MORNING WITH MOMS

It's time for one of our favorite BFA traditions--Morning with Moms! BFA's Community Events Committee (CEC) is honored to host students and their moms from 7-8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the Lightning Gym for coffee, juice and sweet treats.

This event is popular, so please arrive early and park in the overflow lot as not to disrupt carpool. Moms must remain with their children in the gym until 7:45 a.m.; after that time, they can send their student(s) to their classroom(s). Please note, class will begin at the usual time so kids should be in class at 8:10 a.m. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you there!

Tea's bookmark was chosen due to its pretty springtime design reflecting tranquility. Look for your copy of Tea's winning bookmark in your Thursday folder!

SAVE THE DATE TO WATCH DI TEAMS AT STATE

Congratulations again to the Destination Imagination (DI) teams who competed in the South Metro Tournament earlier this month. All three teams are competing in Monster Effects, the Engineering Challenge, and will be presenting their solutions in the P/E Center. We will share finalized competition times in next week's newsletter.

Teacher
APPRECIATE YOUR TEACHER WITH SCRIP

This spring, the BFA community will have the opportunity to participate in teacher and staff gifting with SCRIP. The program makes it easy for parents to choose which teachers and staff they'd like to gift, then make one payment for all of their gifts. After the PTO tallies the gifts, each teacher/staff member receives an email with the total amount collected, and selects which gift cards they would like to receive. By consolidating donations, we are able to provide teachers and staff with meaningful gifts.

The SCRIP program allows the PTO to purchase the requested gift cards at discounts ranging from 2 - 21 percent, depending on the retailer. That discounted amount comes back to BFA from SCRIP, and will be used for PTO-funded programs at school.

Families will be able to place SCRIP orders via the BFA store and pay by credit card. You may designate how much you would like to give to each teacher/staff member in whole dollar increments. Collections will take place April 13-19.

Participation in the SCRIP program is completely voluntary. You are welcome to participate with any amount, or alternatively gift the teachers and staff on your own.

The gifts will be given to the staff during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, the week of May 6, and will be in lieu of any other class gift/collection. Look for more information in future newsletters regarding details on how to contribute to your favorite staff members' gifts!

Questions? Visit the PTO webpage or contact Rachael Hamburger, SCRIP coordinator.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
