NCSY & Torah High's Monthly News & Updates
|
|
|
 |
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Knowing that you are on someones mind is one of the surest ways of feeling cared for and appreciated. Checking in, sharing updates, giving support, these are all indications that you are special to someone. That is what the sounding of the shofar represents.
The essential message of Rosh Hashanah is that their is a G-d in heaven who wants a relationship with us, that literally calls out to us, with each riveting blast.
Fostering strong relationships with our students, parents, faculty, staff and supporters is very important to us at NCSY.
To allow the connection to grow, we must be completely vulnerable and say how we truly feel. So allow me to be completely honest with you when I say that
without all of your support and encouragement of this organization we wouldn't be where we are today, engaging, inspiring and educating thousands of teens across the country.
Your relationship with NCSY is helping them develop a strong and lasting relationship to Judaism, and for that I can not show enough gratitude.
Through all our classes, programs and retreats, we are changing lives. You are changing the Jewish community for the better and shaping the Jewish leaders of tomorrow.
Our hope for this year is that all our students, advisers, and participants realize their own unique relationship to their Jewish religion and heritage.
We hope that your relationship with NCSY this past year has been an incredible and fulfilling one and are looking forward to making it strong and better in the years to come.
Again, I thank you and I wish you and your families a
Shana Tova U'metukah!!

The Jerusalem Journey (TJJ), our 4 week program in Israel, gave close to 130 students the experience of a lifetime.
Upon asking staff
Rabbi
Josh and Laura Stein
,
Shlomo Mandel
and Nina Kagan what they most enjoyed about this trip they couldn't quite find the words. Going all the way from the Golan Heights down to Eilat, hiking, camel riding, snorkeling and cheering, how could they pick just one?!

The Torah High Jewish Leadership course at Camp Northland lead by our Associate City Director Alicia Aquino, had the CIT's learning
all about leadership, Judaism and relationships. Alicia guided them in discovering what these terms meant to them and how to apply them back to their everyday lives. The group learned from each other as well and as a result their knowledge of Judaism, the Jewish people and Israel grew.

"Learning all about relationships and building them together ....We actually applied what we learned on each other and made our time there that much more meaningful", explains Alicia. "Now we are back in Toronto and ready to put it to good use here in the city".
We are so proud of their progress and can't wait to see the impact they have with NCSY this coming year!!! Kol Hakavod!

In early September NCSY held our Regional Board kick off meeting with 27 eager young members attended from across the GTA (1 young woman virtually from Calgary).
The vision of the student board is to develop the next generation of Jewish leadership.
Members are provided with education, inspiration, and practical experience to develop their leadership skills for the upcoming year.
Co-Presidents and 12th grade Westmount students
Daniella Mikanovsky
and
Ryan Gabriel
welcomed all committee members from each sub-division.
Committees for
Education, Events, Shabbaton, Recruitment, Social Action, JSU's were all present and full of ideas, spirit and positivity. The focus of their first meeting was to empower the board to create their own mission statement in the following three categories:
 |
|
 |
The 2016-2017 Regional Student Board |
1. Impact on themselves as an individual
2. Impact on NCSY
3. Impact on the Jewish Community
"Based on this mission", explains Rabbi Max Kalles , Director of Leadership, "we will provide them with the knowledge, guidance, and resources to allow them to achieve their mission within the year."

Our
Jewish School Union (JSU)
Clubs have began. With clubs in 19 schools, with close to 1000 student members,
William Lyon Mackenzie held their first meeting and where students were treated to pizza and a do-it-yourself snack following a vibrant and informative lesson on what the Torah is and how it is a manual for life. With the help of fruit roll ups, marshmallows, pretzel sticks, and chocolates, they made their very own edible Torah scrolls. Thank you to our City Director,
Shlomo Mandel, for leading this creative workshop.

Vancouver
NCSY Vancouver's
Rabbi Samuel Ross and his wife
Gila planned a very extravagant scavenger hunt which took the students all around the beautiful city looking for their next clue. Their special mode of transportation was a limo bus, which made the day extra memorable.

Celebrating our accomplishments at NCSY is very important to us. Saying thank you to those who make it possible is no exception. This past summer team executed a series of exclusive events for our generous donors and supporters of NCSY. On June 23rd we held a fabulous gourmet dining experience at the home of Jason and Judi Berman. Guests were invited to taste and experience some of the finest kosher food Toronto has to offer.

Gourment dining at its finest. |
Another gourmet dining experience was held on Sept 8th. Our generous hosts, Jeffery & Daniella Silver, Chantal & David Ulmer, and Daniella & Seth Greenspan greeted enthusiastic guests for another round of delectable treats. The Silver Family home was the perfect setting for this intimate gathering.
Earlier this month the Berman's kindly opened their home to us again and hosted our Flam Wine Tasting on Sept 18th. This invitation-only event was a memorable one as guests sipped and savored the finest wine Israel has to offer.
