The Rev. Edna "Eddie" Adkins, Deacon
We mourn the loss of the Rev. Eddie Adkins, a deacon of the Diocese of Georgia who died at home on  Saturday, November 30, surrounded by family and friends. Services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 4 at All Saints Episcopal Church on Tybee Island with Bishop Scott Benhase officiating and the Rev. Canon Frank Logue preaching.

Born in Denmark, South Carolina, Deacon Eddie, as she was known,  grew up in Charleston. She liked to play church when she was little, often carrying a Book of Common Prayer around even before she could read it. As a teen, she was active at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charleston and went to the Diocese of South Carolina's camp at St. Christopher's each summer. She graduated from Winthrop College in May 1955, serving as a first grade teacher on Sullivan's Island before marrying Bob Adkins the next year. Bob and Eddie were together for 60 years before his death in 2017. The two had five children, with two sons not surviving infancy. Their children Julie, Charles, and Amee lived the life of Air Force children with the family stationed around the country as well as in France and Germany.

Following Bob's retirement in 1970, they moved to Savannah. Deacon Eddie worked first as a School Media Specialist at Beach High School, later serving at Jenkins High School and Bartlett Middle School. She earned a Master's in Education Media from Georgia Southern University and then an Education Specialist degree from the University of Georgia during that time. A real turning point in her spiritual life came in 1985 when Deacon Eddie joined the Daughters of the King. The regular prayer she adopted then remained a fixture of her days for the rest of her life.

In 1994 she became a Postulant for Holy Orders as a Deacon following a call she described as feeling "Like the Palm Sunday colt. 'The Lord has need of me.'" Bishop Henry Louttit, Jr. ordained her to the diaconate on January 11, 1997. She served at All Saints', Tybee Island, and at St. Luke's, Rincon. She was also active in mentoring future deacons and served as the Co-Chair of the Deacons' Formation Committee. For health reasons, Deacon Eddie retired from actively serving as a deacon in 2016. She maintained her prayer life, close family and church ties, her amazing smile, and abiding sense of joy until she died at home on Saturday.

December: A Season of Thanksgiving
As the year draws to a close, it is a good time for reflection. 2019 has been a busy year at Diocesan House and across our 70 congregations. During this Advent season, I encourage our clergy, leadership, and congregations to take a moment to think back on the year and give thanks for the ministry done both within and beyond our walls in the community. The Advent word for today is raise. I'd like to raise up my gratitude for the many gifts this Diocese has to offer.

If we can begin our month there, then the final "check-list" of items that come at the end of the year becomes that much easier to bear. With that in mind, as is my annual practice, here is helpful list of administrative tasks to consider as we draw to the close of our fiscal year:
  1.  Review all upcoming receivables and payables to ensure they are paid or deposited before Dec. 31st , 2019
  2.  If your congregation manages payroll, begin preparation for W-2 and 1099s in 2020
  3.  Review and begin preparation for annual gift letters
  4.  Communicate stewardship and budget planning efforts with congregation
  5.  Submit updated Vestry contact information to Diocese in January 2020
  6.  Parochial report data is due March 1st, 2020
For questions to any questions, please email me.

Rediscover the Water of Life in Lent
In Lent 2020, the people and churches of the Diocese of Georgia are invited to join together for  A Spring in the Desert: Rediscovering the Water of Life in Lent. There is a no cost option for people to fully participate in a class in their congregation using the online classes from ChurchNext.

About A Spring in the Desert
The Diocese of Georgia's bishop-elect Frank and his wife, Victoria, offer a Lenten journey inspired by the many passages of scripture that use images of water in the desert as a sign of the healing and wholeness that come through God alone. To this they add the distilled wisdom of the Desert Mothers and Fathers and the surprisingly rich inspiration of the plants and animals that thrive in an arid land. Along the way, they will share the ways our faith speaks to the barren places in our lives and how those times of drought can be a source of strength.

How to take part
To share this material, they wrote a Lenten devotional for Forward Movement, with short daily reflections. In addition, they filmed a series of online videos in which they teach in 5-6 minute videos that can be shown and discussed. While the books are available at the link below, they are not required to take part. More information on the online videos will follow.
