199th Convention to meet on Jekyll Island
Save the dates November 5-7 for the 199th Convention of the Diocese of Georgia at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.  The Southeast Convocation will host the  convention, which last met at this conference center in 2014. Since then more hotels have opened in the area.  Canon Katie Easterlin and Ms. Maggie Lyons are working on hotel contracts and will later release blocks of rooms.   Many more plans will be coming together and announced here in From the Field . For now, we wanted to get the dates and location on the calendars of our clergy, lay leaders, and congregations.

Give the Gift of Summer Camp
Do you have a grandchild or Godchild who would enjoy a week of Honey Creek Summer Camp. Consider the gift that will offer memories for lifetime. Camp gives youth a chance to get away from the constant push to achieve, to accomplish, to make the next grade, or get the next gold star. At camp, campers can just be themselves, free from expectations, or obligations. And spiritual directors at each session give campers a chance to enter more fully into the love God has for them in a setting away from their family and church home.

The registration fee of $495 covers all expenses for a week of age-appropriate fun at Honey Creek. The dates for this summer are:
  • High School Camp: June 7-13, 2020
  • Camp St. Joseph & Mary I (Completed grades 3-5): June 14-20, 2020
  • Camp St. Peter I (Completed grades 6-8): June 21-27, 2020
  • Camp St. Joseph & Mary II: July 5-11, 2020
  • Camp St. Peter II (Completed grades 6-8): July 12-18, 2020

Summer Mission Trip!
Diocese of Georgia E.Y.E. Registration Open Now!

This coming Summer, current high school students are invited to be part of the Diocese of Georgia's delegation to the Episcopal Youth Event (E.Y.E.). This gathering of youth from across The Episcopal Church takes place once every three years. E.Y.E. 2020 will take place at the University of Maryland, in College Park MD, and is hosted by the National Church and the Diocese of Washington.

Our Diocesan journey will begin the day before E.Y.E. and will last several days afterward, as we take part in mission work with other youth from the Episcopal Dioceses in the Southeast. If you have questions about this event, please contact the Rev. Canon Joshua Varner at jvarner@gaepiscopal.org. To register, visit http://bit.ly/EYE2020Reg.

Please note that the National Church's website lists January 6 as the date registration opens. This is the earliest day that the Diocese of Georgia can register its delegation together. Diocesan Registration is currently open.
St. Matthew's invites Episcopalians to join Savannah MLK Parade
The Savannah Convocation, and any other congregations that would like to join in, are invited to participate in the Savannah MLK Parade on January 20. The Episcopal Diocese of Georgia has a walking group and a trolley for those who prefer to ride. The Parade begins promptly at 10 AM, so please come to St. Matthew's between 9-9:30 that morning to park your vehicle, and a shuttle will drop you off at the starting location near East Broad Street Elementary School. After the Parade, St. Matthew's will host a service of Holy Eucharist at approximately 11:30 AM. They are partnering with their neighbors at Greater Gaines AME Church and featuring their Pastor, the Rev. Kimberly McMichael, as guest preacher. The offering during worship will benefit the newly formed Savannah Area Interfaith Justice Ministry. A lunch reception at St. Matthew's will follow the service.

Youth Invited to MLK weekend Lock-in
Savannah Convo is organizing a youth Lock-in for all students in grades 6-12 from 6 PM on January 19 to 1:30 PM on January 20, 2020. This event (shared on Facebook here) is coordinated with the Savannah Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Parade on January 20. Please register your young people on or before January 12, 2020 online here: Register for the Lock-in online

The Lock-In will begin at 6 PM on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1401 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd, Savannah, GA 31415. The congregation will provide dinner on Sunday and breakfast and lunch on Monday. Be sure to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, pajamas, toiletries (no showers), a change of clothes, weather-appropriate outerwear, and comfortable walking shoes. Feel free to bring snacks to share and appropriate games to play. The group will have breakfast at St. Matthew's on the morning of January 20th, then head to the parade's starting point at 9 AM. The parade begins at 10 AM. We will follow the parade route back to St. Matthew's Church. All parade participants are invited to take part in a celebration of Holy Eucharist, followed by lunch at St. Matthew's, beginning at approximately 11:30 AM (watch out for closed streets due to the parade!). Please pick up your youth from St. Matthew's no later than 1:30 PM on Monday, January 20, 2020.

The parade and the lock-in is free for all participants, but St. Matthew's Rector, the Rev. Guillermo Arboleda, requests participating parishes help St. Matthew's offset the cost of parade registration and the lunch reception, which is intended to benefit the whole Diocese/Convocation. Please consider sending a donation to St. Matthew's between $100-$150 with "MLK Parade" in the memo line.
Winter Youth Event: Going Slow
For many of us, the holiday season can be filled with busyness and stress, both within and beyond the life of the congregation. There are so many things to do! In this context, the Winter Youth Retreat, for young people in Grades 6-12, offers them a chance to "come away by yourselves and rest a while" (Mark 6:31). While the program, including large group and small group gatherings, is part of the weekend, there are also significant amounts of free time built into the schedule, so that our youth can pause and reflect.

We will take an honest look at our lives, and how the cracks in them can sometimes let the light shine through. There will be opportunities for healing prayer , music, laugher, and play, all built into our time together.  And of course, our young people will have the chance to gather with one another and seek and serve Christ in each other.

The Rev. David Rose, of St. Luke's, Rincon, and the Rev. Joshua Varner, will co-coordinate this weekend. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2020 and concludes at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 12.

King of Peace, Kingsland, put together a moving crew to get John Wieters moved into his new home. His home was lost during Hurricane Irma. It has been a long painful process for John as he went through the long wait to restore funds to purchase another home. King of Peace was with him from day one.

St. Michael's, Waynesboro, had a hippie youth float in their town's Christmas parade.

While visiting St. Luke's, Rincon, the Rev.  Kevin Veitinger, the Deacon who serves our ministry for homeless persons in Savannah, received knitted hats for the Community of St. Joseph's clothes closet made by several ladies from the church. Pictured above at left with Kevin is Judi Brown, who made many of the hats. At right , youth from St. Luke's are shown after they decorated the Chrismon Tree this past Sunday evening.
