Reserve a hotel room now for May
The planned May 30 ordination and consecration of the 11th Bishop of Georgia will take place the same weekend as graduation for the Savannah College of Art and Design. At present, this presents no challenge for those wanting to book hotel accommodations, but you will want to reserve a room soon. To assist, we offer three blocks of rooms and will be able to secure additional blocks when these are full.
The liturgy will be held in the Johnny Mercer Theater at the Savannah Civic Center. The service starts at 11 AM. On Sunday at 11 AM, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will preach at an outdoor Eucharist in Forsyth Park. The hotels are convenient to both locations.
Critical information: The block for Friday and Saturday night is cheaper per night, but those rooms are only available at that rate when booking both nights.

Fish fry in Cordele benefits Episcopal relief efforts
Christ Church Cordele held its annual Fish Fry for Episcopal Relief and Development with great success. Led by Gene Stephens, a group of men gathered on the back porch of Holmes Hall (fellowship building) to fry hushpuppies and fish caught in Lake Blackshear and donated for the event. The Parish Life Committee provided decorations fit for a first class restaurant and coleslaw, grits and desserts. The event was attended by members of the congregation and many visitors. The event exceeded its $2,000 goal in raising $2,100. To find out more about the Episcopal Church's relief and development agency, visit episcopalrelief.org.

St. Matthew's invites Episcopalians to join Savannah MLK Parade
The Savannah Convocation, and any other congregations that would like to join in, are invited to participate in the Savannah MLK Parade on January 20. The Episcopal Diocese of Georgia has a walking group and a trolley for those who prefer to ride. The Parade begins promptly at 10 AM, so please come to St. Matthew's between 9-9:30 that morning to park your vehicle, and a shuttle will drop you off at the starting location near East Broad Street Elementary School. After the Parade, St. Matthew's will host a service of Holy Eucharist at approximately 11:30 AM. They are partnering with their neighbors at Greater Gaines AME Church and featuring their Pastor, the Rev. Kimberly McMichael, as guest preacher. The offering during worship will benefit the newly formed Savannah Area Interfaith Justice Ministry. A lunch reception at St. Matthew's will follow the service.
Youth Invited to MLK weekend Lock-in
Savannah Convo is organizing a youth Lock-in for all students in grades 6-12 from 6 PM on January 19 to 1:30 PM on January 20, 2020. This event (shared on Facebook here) is coordinated with the Savannah Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Parade on January 20. Please register your young people on or before January 12, 2020 online here:
Register for the Lock-in online
The Lock-In will begin at 6 PM on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1401 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd, Savannah, GA 31415. The congregation will provide dinner on Sunday and breakfast and lunch on Monday. Be sure to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, pajamas, toiletries (no showers), a change of clothes, weather-appropriate outerwear, and comfortable walking shoes. Feel free to bring snacks to share and appropriate games to play. The group will have breakfast at St. Matthew's on the morning of January 20th, then head to the parade's starting point at 9 AM. The parade begins at 10 AM. We will follow the parade route back to St. Matthew's Church. All parade participants are invited to take part in a celebration of Holy Eucharist, followed by lunch at St. Matthew's, beginning at approximately 11:30 AM (watch out for closed streets due to the parade!). Please pick up your youth from St. Matthew's no later than 1:30 PM on Monday, January 20, 2020.
The parade and the lock-in is free for all participants, but St. Matthew's Rector, the Rev. Guillermo Arboleda, requests participating parishes help St. Matthew's offset the cost of parade registration and the lunch reception, which is intended to benefit the whole Diocese/Convocation. Please consider sending a donation to St. Matthew's between $100-$150 with "MLK Parade" in the memo line.

There is still time to register for Winter Youth Event
Registration remains open for Winter Youth Event. For many of us, the holiday season can be filled with busyness and stress, both within and beyond the life of the congregation. There are so many things to do! In this context, the Winter Youth Retreat, for young people in Grades 6-12, offers them a chance to "come away by yourselves and rest a while" (Mark 6:31). While the program, including large group and small group gatherings, is part of the weekend, there are also significant amounts of free time built into the schedule, so that our youth can pause and reflect.
We will take an honest look at our lives, and how the cracks in them can sometimes let the light shine through. There will be opportunities for healing prayer
, music, laugher, and play, all built into our time together.
And of course, our young people will have the chance to gather with one another and seek and serve Christ in each other.
The Rev. David Rose, of St. Luke's, Rincon, and the Rev. Joshua Varner, will co-coordinate this weekend. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2020 and concludes at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 12.
January 10-12, 2020
Grades 6-12
Cost: $115 (after January 3, $125)
