Tell us about your personal journey. (This encompasses both personal and professional aspects)
My name is Darrell Lewis, and I’m 43 years old. I’ve been married for 16 years and have been with my wife for over 20. I grew up in Muleshoe, Texas, the youngest of seven siblings, where I learned the value of hard work and dedication—and that I wanted to pursue a life beyond a small town.
After high school, I attended West Texas A&M University, where I was a four-year starter on the football team. College challenged my faith and values, but a mentor, Rich Renner, helped me focus on my walk with Christ and understand that life is about more than football. Despite tough seasons early on, my teammates and I remained dedicated, going from 0–11 my freshman year to winning the Lone Star Conference Championship my senior year.
Those experiences shaped my approach to life and coaching. I’ve now been coaching for 18 years and serve as Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Crandall High School (Texas). I lead not because I know everything, but because I stand firmly on the principles of hard work, dedication, and patience—values that have guided me every step of the way.
What pivotal experiences shaped your current path?
After losing my brother a few years ago, I vowed never to take life for granted. From that moment on, I decided that every opportunity in my profession would be met with my full effort, determination, and commitment—no matter the challenges.
What are the most valuable lessons you've learned through your work?
The most important lesson that I have learned is to stay the course and not change who you are for anyone. Be strong and hold up to your standards and do not lower them for anything or anyone.
What drives your desire to contribute and make a difference?
Knowing that I can reach and empower every student that I come in contact with and put them on the path that can make them better young men and women.
What are your highest hopes for democracy to unite and uplift, and inspire?
My highest hope for democracy is that it becomes a unifying force—one that brings people together across differences, uplifts every voice, and inspires action rooted in compassion and shared purpose.
