A Note From...

Hello Courtney,

After working in the scholarship world, I have seen the impact a scholarship can have on a student. It can light up the face up of student fresh out of high school, you can see the relief when a single parent knows they have money to help with school, and it can impact the non-traditional student coming back to school to make a change in their life. There are many different reasons why someone chooses to attend college, but everyone usually has the same end goal of receiving a degree or certificate. A scholarship can be a lifeline for our ACC students.

There are many ACC students currently working on their scholarship applications for the 2024-2025 academic year. It is not an easy process for a student to work on their application, tell their story, pass it off to the Foundation, and then have it reviewed by complete strangers. We should all take a moment to commend those willing to take those steps. For so many, it is the first step to a brighter future for themselves, their family, and their community.

This wouldn’t be possible without generous people like you! You have helped to make a better tomorrow for so many of our past and current ACC students. Many students have told me, “I wouldn’t be able to attend school without this scholarship.” So, from all the students, faculty, and staff at ACC, we send a heartfelt thank you!

We hope that you can help assist in being a scholarship reader for this year and help us score our scholarship applications. Scholarship readers will be provided with information on how to read and score our scholarship applications. This is a vital piece of the scholarship puzzle, and we do need your assistance with it. Scholarship reading will start around mid-April, and you can select how many you would like to read. Register by clicking on the button in the Quick Links to the left of this note.

Sincerely,

Travis

FEATURE

Elevate Supports Students at ACC

Elevate is an inclusive higher education program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ACC’s Elevate program has been running for seven years, and is the only Inclusive Higher Education program at a Community College in Colorado. Elevate students take classes with other students on campus and work toward a certificate in Comprehensive Higher Education. The program is typically completed in three years, through six semesters.

Elevate Director, Jennifer Woegens says, “This time helps students grow personally, as well as academically.”

The students in the program have even started the Elevate Club, a social club that promotes inclusion on campus. Within the club, they have three groups and all ACC students are invited to participate:

1)     Puma on the Beat – a dance club

2)     Level Up with Elevate – a video game club

3)     Follow Your Art – an art club

While Elevate’s funding comes from many sources, fundraising remains an important part of ensuring that ACC’s program has the funds it needs to make our Elevate students’ experiences the best they can be. Students recently attended Think College’s Student Leadership Conference with funds from an ACC Foundation Mini-Grant.

We took note of Jennifer’s fundraising efforts when she recently facilitated a $500 private donation that was then matched by the Scott Family Foundation, for a total donation of $1000.

WHAT WE DO

WE AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS - AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Can you spare 30-60 minutes to read ACC students’ scholarship essays? Each year, the ACC Foundation receives over a thousand scholarship applications, and reading them is a huge process. In order to ensure equitability in this process, we need three readers for each scholarship essay. For that, we need help from our ACC community.

To volunteer as a scholarship application reader, register HERE.

Please also share the link with those you think might be interested in participating in this process. We will start assigning applications in April. Instructions and guides for readers will be provided once you are registered. If you have questions, please reach out to our Scholarship Program Manager, Travis Ogburn, at Travis.Ogburn@arapahoe.edu.

Quotes from past reviewers:

“I would like to know our campus body more, understand who our students are and what financial needs they have as well as what academic goals they have and why they have chosen to pursue higher ed.”

“I enjoy reviewing text and have worked as an editor in the past. Scholarships are such a valuable opportunity for students who invest the time and I want to be a part of contributing to their success!”

GIVE LATER

Taxes and Philanthropy – A Brief Word

The IRS provides important tax incentives to encourage philanthropy. For certain gifts the tax benefits are immediate. For others, they come in the future. The right path for you always depends upon your situation.

For most, retaining control over one’s assets for life is the top priority. The future is uncertain. A revocable gift allows you to create your estate gift today, while preserving total control over your assets throughout life. Any tax benefit will come when your estate settles, but you will enjoy maximum flexibility and peace of mind until that time. Examples include:

·      Charitable Bequest – Will or Living Trust

·      Beneficiary Designation – IRA or Life Insurance

Unless you are confident that you will not outlive your assets, bequests and beneficiary designations are almost always excellent options.

If you goal is current tax reduction, however, a charitable trust or charitable gift annuity might be worth considering.

The Forever ACC Legacy Society has been created to honor and thank those who remember the College with a gift in their estate plans. There are many ways to do this. Some have named Arapahoe Community College to receive a future gift in their will or living trust, while others have named us as a future beneficiary of a life insurance policy, IRA or charitable trust. A variety of options exist.

For more information about the Forever ACC Legacy Society and planned giving program, please email GiftPlanning@arapahoe.edu. There is never any expectation or obligation to complete a gift.

Year to Career

Rachel Walker, ACC's Year to Career Grant Director presented at our February Foundation board meeting and shared a lot of great information about this new program.

This program started with a $4.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor as a part of the Department's push to strengthen community colleges.

ACC has launched this program with a Behavioral Health program, and is expanding to include a Broadband Technology program.
