This month, we’re proud to share progress that reflects our ongoing commitment to creating and preserving high-quality affordable housing across the Triad.

An exciting step forward in the development process - the Greensboro City Council has officially approved the sale of the former Regency Inn property. This paves the way for our $29.5 million redevelopment that will bring 114 new affordable homes for seniors and families. In partnership with the City of Greensboro, this two-phase community will include ADA-accessible units and serve households earning 30–60% of the area median income.

We’re also honored to share that Milner Commons received a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance in the Residential category from the City of Raleigh.

This recognition celebrates the thoughtful design and strong community partnerships that made this development possible. Click to learn more about fellow recipients.

Finally, we invite you to join us on November 15 as we celebrate the dedication of Hardee Street Apartments, a collaborative development with Self-Help, that redefines what affordable housing looks like for families in East Durham. Learn more and RSVP.

As the federal government shutdown continues to impact families and communities across our region, we are working to connect residents with local support services. Visit our Community Resources page to find information and organizations offering assistance.

Industry News

New research from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency highlights an emerging challenge: thousands of affordable homes built through the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program are nearing the end of their affordability periods.

Since 1987, the Housing Credit has helped create or preserve more than 121,000 affordable apartments statewide. But within the next decade, over 16,000 homes could lose rent restrictions, putting families at risk of higher-cost housing or displacement.

The report also points to proven solutions: data-driven preservation efforts, new allocations of Housing Credits, and supplemental funding that can extend affordability for another generation.

At DHIC, we’re committed to meeting this challenge head-on. Across the Triangle, we’re leading efforts to preserve aging affordable housing communities - protecting homes, preventing displacement, and strengthening the neighborhoods we serve.

Our Glenbrook Crossing preservation planning in Southeast Raleigh is the next step in this commitment. Home to nearly 100 residents - many seniors, individuals with disabilities, and working families - Glenbrook’s rebuild will preserve affordability for more than 50 families, add ADA-accessible units, and ensure the property’s sustainability for decades to come.

As we close out the year, we invite you to make a year-end gift in support of our mission. Your generosity helps safeguard affordable homes, prevent displacement, and create lasting impact for those who need it most.
