2025 was a milestone year for DHIC.

We achieved exciting progress in our development pipeline, strengthened current partnerships while forming new ones, and continued our commitment to showing up for you, our community.

This past year we celebrated major development milestones:

We completed lease up at four of our development properties:

In Greensboro, the City Council approved the sale of the former Regency Inn - a project that will create 114 affordable homes, including 54 units for seniors, serving households earning 30-60% of the AMI.

In Cary, the Town Council approved rezoning for The Carr Center, a partnership with The Carying Place that will bring 62 affordable rental homes to the area.

Alongside our active development projects, we remain deeply committed to rehabilitating and preserving existing communities.

In 2025, our Homeownership Center hosted 10 homebuyer education and financial literacy workshops, and supported the closing of 4 townhomes at The Village at Washington Terrace.

Our resident services team worked with property managers and community organizations to build a community garden, partner with the Durham Senior Center, host National Nights Out, and celebrate moments like MLK Day and Juneteenth at various properties.

We were also honored to conclude the year with a multitude of recognition for our work. We received:

Finally, we continued to advocate for policies and programs that support housing affordability. We were honored to welcome Governor Stein to Milner Commons and to participate in NC Housing Day at the North Carolina General Assembly; Local Lobby Day at Raleigh City Council and the Wake County Board of Commissioners; the National NeighborWorks Legislative Day, and the Housing Partnership Network DC Policy Meeting, lifting up the voices of residents in conversations that shape North Carolina’s housing future.

We were also honored to collaborate with Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies, whose Doc+ students helped document the story of Hardee Street Apartments through multimedia storytelling - capturing the human impact of affordable housing in a rapidly changing East Durham.

We hope you’ll stay with us in 2026 as we begin an exciting new five-year Strategic Plan - continuing to champion housing affordability with our partners, residents, and community at the center of everything we do.
