This month, we’re highlighting recent milestones, new community resources, and the people whose lives are being strengthened through affordable housing.

We’re excited to share that we were recently awarded a Portfolio Strengthening Grant from NeighborWorks America to support planning for the redevelopment of Glenbrook Crossing. Since this program launched in 2003, these grants have supported over 100 network organizations to help preserve affordable housing portfolios across the country.

As we look toward the future of our communities, we’re also continuing to invest in the people who call them home through the work of our Resident Services team and Homeownership Center.

Our Beacon Ridge development property is now home to a new food pantry, made possible through a partnership with Southeast Raleigh Promise and the local Food Bank.

For the Torres family, the path to buying a home began without a clear roadmap. Through homebuyer counseling provided by our Homeownership Center, they received guidance on credit, downpayment assistance, and the steps involved in the homebuying process.

As we enter Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the importance of accessible, culturally responsive resources for prospective homeowners. Isaac, our bilingual housing counselor, helps Spanish-speaking homebuyers like the Torres family navigate the process.

As the Torres family shares, “The satisfaction of being able to say, ‘This is ours,’ is an incredible feeling.”

Stories like theirs demonstrate the importance of not only developing housing and supporting homebuyers, but cultivating strong communities.

Industry News

Last month DHIC President Yolanda Winstead presented a session, “Crash Course on Affordable Housing Development”, in collaboration with Southeast Raleigh Promise CEO Yvette Holmes, at the City of Raleigh Affordable Housing Forum.

She shared insights from her decades of experience developing affordable housing, discussing the many considerations involved in bringing housing projects from an idea to reality - including land, financing, partnerships, and community engagement.

The conversation highlighted the importance of collaboration and mission-aligned partnerships as Raleigh continues to grow and faces ongoing challenges around housing affordability. We’re proud to contribute our perspective to the broader dialogue around creating safe, stable, and affordable housing.

Financial Literacy Counseling

Oftentimes, the communities we serve have financial goals that go beyond homeownership.

When Sherri first connected with us, budgeting, saving, and managing debt felt overwhelming. Through one-on-one financial literacy counseling, she gained the knowledge and tools to better understand her finances and make informed decisions about her future.

Our counselors take a holistic look at each client’s financial picture, providing guidance on budgeting, debt management, credit, savings, insurance, and investing. Whether you’re working toward homeownership or simply building a stronger financial future, our financial literacy counseling services could be the first step.
