Hello, October – and hello pink!

You feel it? We sure feel it. It’s subtle, but the air outside is getting just a liiiiittle crisper (or at least the humidity is taking a breather) – and, yes, pumpkin-spice-flavored everything is popping up like porch pumpkins in Old Mandeville.

Fall has officially arrived on the Northshore, and at St. Tammany Health System, that means it’s time to think pink.

Every October, our Power of Pink campaign takes centerstage, turning awareness into action in the fight against breast cancer. It’s a season of hope, support and strength – and around here, it comes with a whole lot of heart.

Throughout the month, you’ll see pink showing up throughout the community as our Be Well Bus team (and their mobile mammography equipment) joins with local businesses and organizations to spread one key message: screenings save lives.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in their lifetime, and early detection is still the best defense. That’s why we go big every October to educate, empower and remind our community that no one should have to tackle cancer alone.

So, as you break out your cozy sweaters and hunt down one of those Café au Lait-flavored pies that Hubig’s has everyone so excited about, we invite you to join us in supporting this important cause.

Schedule your screening. Encourage a friend. Patronize one of our community partners’ give-back events. It all makes a difference.

Recently, St. Tammany Health System had the opportunity to honor the late James Core, who served on the STHS Board of Commissioners for more than four decades. As part of this month’s Community Checkup, STHS President Joan Coffman remembers Mr. Core’s vital contributions to the Northshore, in addition to sharing other recent STHS headlines.

Tis the season for coughin’ and sneezin’

With cold and flu season upon us, St. Tammany Health System’s primary care offices – which operate under the St. Tammany Physicians Network banner – have scheduled flu vaccine clinics for the convenience of local residents.

Once upon a time – or, more precisely, last month – the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Tammany Parish Hospital entered a worldwide Read-A-Thon to promote reading to NICU babies. So they read and they read and they read, read, read, read. Then, last week, came the happiest kind of happily-ever-afters.
