Hot, hot, hot!

Heat domes. Spaghetti models. Jim Cantore sightings.

Welcome to summer in South Louisiana, where the heat is on – and then some.

But even with daytime temperatures hovering lately somewhere between scorching and downright dangerous, we haven’t had time to slow down here at St. Tammany Health System. There are celebrations to be held, initiatives to be announced and an inaugural class of Family Medicine residents for us to welcome.

And if that’s not enough, that andouille isn’t going to grill itself over the extended Fourth of July weekend.

If you’re in the same boat, we have three words of caution for you: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

(And if you’ll be shooting off fireworks, we have a few additional words of caution for you, courtesy of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.)

Better yet, we recommend you cool off by spending a few minutes in the merciful embrace of your overtaxed air conditioner while perusing the latest headlines from our St. Tammany Health System newsroom.

You’ll find them below.

Enjoy, stay cool this Independence Day weekend, and thank you for being part of the St. Tammany Health System family.

Community Checkup

In a twin celebration of determination and compassion, STHS’s cancer care team recently hosted local patients and their families for Cancer Patient Appreciation Day, a festive event featuring music, food and fellowship. It’s among the topics covered this month in St. Tammany Health System President and CEO Joan Coffman’s monthly Community Checkup video.

‘A new era’

St. Tammany Health System welcomed its inaugural class of Family Medicine specialists on Monday to the newly launched St. Tammany Health System/Ochsner Family Medicine Residency program, a first-in-the-region initiative designed to train the area’s next generation of primary care physicians.

In all, six doctors will complete their Family Medicine training over the next three years at the 18,000-square-foot, purpose-built St. Tammany Physicians Network clinic in North Covington.

“This is the beginning of a new era for St. Tammany Health System and our mission and purpose to serve the community of western St. Tammany Parish,” Dr. Torcson said. “That mission now includes training the next generation of primary care physicians that will improve access to healthcare services, promote health equity and ultimately improve the health and well-being of our community.”
