I pray this finds you all well. When asked to define swing (music), Louis Armstrong said, If you have to ask, you'll never know. He wasn't trying to exclude folks from learning about swing, but rather sharing that a menial verbal definition wasn't going to cut it. In order to understand swing, he said, one must hear it, dance to it, feel it for oneself. Swing must be experienced, not explained.
In our Gospel reading this Sunday from John (10:22-30), Jesus is once again facing the skeptics. Despite having performed signs and having preached until he was blue in the face that he is the Messiah, God's Son, people are still demanding 'proof'. I imagine an exasperated Jesus when he says, I have told you, and you do not believe. This wasn't said to exclude anybody from believing in him, but rather to encourage folks to realize that faith is an experience of love, grace, mercy, and trust, not merely a sign of two to be performed. Like swing, faith is experienced from the inside out, not the outside in.
Dear ones I pray that God's incomprehensible, inexplicable love and grace transforms us from the inside out, radiating out into the world to encourage others to hear, dance, feel and experience this love, too
Sending love to all of you
